The cars i drive the most are 35 and 37 years old. The 4 year old car gets driven on days like today when good ac is needed lol

I know I’ve been in the WRX for that A/C this week lol. But I’m genuinely not excited to eventually need a “new” car. My dad’s CRV has had its front radar sensor stolen twice while parked in the Bronx. It’s a $2500 replacement at the dealer. Just for some scumbag to pull it out of the grille again.
Prices are definitely too high. A lot of my daughter’s friends don’t drive because of the price of insurance and both new and used cars are too high.
Hb420: I feel you on the AC. I was trying to save some weight on the front by removing the AC. Was one of the dumbest decisions I have made
Kip-ft: sucks that anything that can get stolen will get stolen. Hope he was able to take counter measures to make it harder for thieves to take out
I’m worried as well. I don’t think I can afford, nor fix a new/used car for my daughter. And then throw insurance along with that? Ugh…
I have no idea how my mom paid for this when I first drove while I was still in high school.
Add the child as an occasional, non-primary driver to the cars in the family. it was less than 1/3 the price of me being the primary driver on any car when i was in high school.
Very grateful we have no payments on anything here (outside the cargo trailer that’s almost paid off). The scoots, bikes, and both golfs are all paid off. And boy do the dealerships know it; even after telling the one we got her TDI from we live 1700 miles away and to stop contacting us, obviously they missed that second part. Offered to ship at just $1 per mile if we buy today!!
Always a good way to drum up business when you’re desperate…“buy from us, we’ll gladly charge you more!!”
ETA: The manufacturers/legislators/insurers thinking people want more and more “spyware” in their cars is certainly slowing down a lot of people I know from vastly different backgrounds/walks of life from running out to buy new cars as well.
I thought the points in this video on a related topic also made sense.

I have a hard time watching these videos because the speakers state data without providing sources. I thought they would be in the description. Nope. Like, his hypotheses make sense, but how do I know any of these analyses/predictions are legitimate?
Going off everything he is stating as truth (considering that I don’t follow the industry all that much), it is interesting to note that used EV market being so strong. I was REALLY apprehensive about looking at used EVs due to battery degradation - but I don’t have any data to back that up, admittedly. I assume people - as lazy as they are - would run the batteries ragged in these cars, and there’s no indication about the quality one would have when purchasing used. (Again, no experience to back that up, but that’s how I’m going in.)
Then there’s the whole “excessive electronics” aspect that I’m against. This is from my experience in building very complex things that require several failsafe systems - and I just don’t see that. I mean, even on the Honda Crosstour that I have, the “front collision warning” randomly alerts me, even when no car is in front of me. Imagine if that was associated with automatic braking. Get outta here.
I’d fully support a very simple electronic vehicle though. One that still maintains driver control always and doesn’t “support” drive complacency. When we begin looking at stuff for the daughter, I’d definitely keep my options open, but I would really need to get smart on these things.
Coworker has it sweet right now though: He lives away from the city, has a basic Tesla model 3, and home solar panels. Charging that thing is free right now since he’s paid off the panels. It’s awesome. I’d love a setup like that.
My Tesla applies the brakes for no apparent reason all the time. Sounds like you might like the Slate truck. Here is a video that speaks to the value of simple cars that you touched on.
