Think my alternator is fried, now what?

The brushes in the alt are worn out, trust me I had the same problem with the light going on and off for about a month. It will fail soon. BIG job too.

I agree with the brush contact failure. If you’re on a tight budget, I suggest avoiding long trips with the car. Going to work, picking up groceries, taking your kids to school, etc. is okay for now. Also, invest in a battery tester to see if the battery is getting charged at all, and monitor it closely. Just because your battery light is not coming on anymore doesn’t mean the alt has enough juice to charge it.

Your type of problem poses stress loads to both the alt and the battery. So, the last thing you want to happen is to replace both the alt and the battery. And I highly suggest you do the work whenever possible.

What should I do? wait to it fails?

The light was on and off tonight quite a bit, but it always seemed like a loose connection. The light would flicker sometimes.
The idle was also going from 1000-1500 back and forth for a while as the batt light was on.

You have no choice. You have to change it soon. Like I said, don’t buy the alt from Crappy Tire coz’ they’re about $250 plus taxes there. The reason why your engine is idling high is because it is trying to compensate for the bad alt. You’ll notice that when you rev high when at speed, the batt. light comes off. You have to do this in order to compensate for now, but you’re putting your engine in danger since you’re revving high in order for the alt to work. Where in Toronto are you?

You may be able to get an alt. rebuild kit. Still requires you to remove the alt. from the car. See if the Haynes Electrical Manual book covers rebuilding alternators. Don’t have the Haynes Integra manual with me right now, so I don’t know if rebuilding the alt. is covered there.

Did you explain everything to the mechanic (ie. batt. light intermittently turns on/off, etc.)? Did he/she say anything else as to what the problem could be? If not, then he’s not reliable. Your batt. light doesn’t come on just for kicks. And if he/she doesn’t have a clue (or looks like he/she doesn’t have a clue) on what it could be, then look for another mechanic.

P.S. If a mechanic says, “it’s so-and-so that’s causing the problem…”, get a second opinion.

it’s too cold here to do that right now. I will have to bring it by to Honda tommarow, What should I tell them?

Thanks

I have a mechanic in Mississauga that did my alternator for $250 including taxes, labour, & the alt. itself (alt. cost $165). That does not include replacing the belt. Use this as a guide.

Ok, was going to school car almost died I just barely got it to the front of my house. Just called CAA will be towing car over to Honda in about an hour. I know honda has rebuilt alternators so It shouldint be too expensive, I will go by 250, but it doesn’t really matter cause I have no other choice on where to bring my car.

Thanks

Their going to install a brand new alternator from Parts Source which has a 5 year warranty on it. It is $250 for the alternator, acura wants 432 for theirs. Installation and total is something like $438. Now i just hope that the battery is still ok, they have to run a test on that. Anyways Il let you know what happens.

I didn’t want to start a new thread, so I’ll ask here…

Oz, who is your mechanic?? cause I’m having the same problem, and would like to get my alternator replaced. I’m also from Mississauga, so a mechanic in the area would be great.

Thanks…
