timing question

i cannot get the timing on my car set…the distributor doesnt turn far enough to get the red line lined up to 16 degrees. the closesest i can get is 12 degrees. any ideas? also, i dont know if this is related or not, but my car runs great unless i am cruising at a steady speed, then is surges and hesitates. any advice would be greatly appriciated.

I suggest you check your timing belt… it probably has slipped a tooth… check to see if everything is lined up correctly.

had the same problem after i set my timing belt.

If it’s running smoothly, your cam gears are probably aligned ok, but check the crankshaft gear. that’s where mine was off by one notch.

jus wondering, did you already jump the two wire (located at front passenger kick panel) before checking the timing? if you did then jus like everybody else said your timing belt probably jump a tooth or so. that could be why your car is performing like that.

yea i did jump the wires…i hope my timing belt isnt off cause i really dont feel like pulling everything apart again.

The good news is you don’t have to remove your engine mount if you’re just adjusting your timing belt. The bad news is, if it’s off by one tooth on the crank, you still gotta do the rest. However, it’s much easier to take apart the 2nd time. Not NEARLY as much wrestling with the crankshaft pulley bolt
