im having a problem when i sit at idel my tranny is making noise almost as if rock were in it thats how it sound but when i put the clutch pedal in no noise why is this what is goin bad???:squint:
if you’re sitting at idle, i’m assuming you’re in neutral
which means it’s not a transmission problem.
i believe it is cause the noise leaves when then clutch is in but the returns when the slowing down or at idle
well, i haven’t had the problem i’m thinking about, so you’ll have to wait for more members (preferably those who’ve had the problem i’m about to mention) to see this and respond, but perhaps your clutch springs have started falling out and are rattling around? or some other clutch-related problem?
do you get it when you accelerate and are always driving around? or just when the car’s in neutral?
Trannys have a mainshaft and countershaft. The main shaft goes the speed of the clutch disc and the counter shaft goes the speed of the wheels. When the vehicle is stopped and in neutral with the clutch engaged (foot off) the main shaft is moving the speed of the engine. The countershaft is stopped. When you disengage the clutch (foot on) the clutch disc is released for the flywheel and pressure plate. The inertia of the disc will still make the shaft rotate for a while. When you place it into gear the gear engages the countershaft synchro (for 1-2 gear) and the mainshaft is stopped. (3.23:1 times 0 is 0).
What does this mean. You probably have a bad mainshaft bearing. The mainshaft uses 2 support bearings and 2 synchro needle bearings. The countershaft uses 3 support bearings and 4 synchro bearings. The synchro bearings hardly ever go out. The support bearings always go out. Another bearing that always goes out are differential bearings. Specially on the the Type-Writers. I would open up the tranny and replace these bearings and the mainshaft seal.
I wouldn’t recommend you drive the car until you fix the problem. I defenitely wouldn’t recommend oil additives.

I agree, definitely a mainshaft bearing problem. Most likely the bearing that sits in your “clutch bell housing” side of the transmission casing (the big end). That’s the one that typically goes bad.
mine makes a noise like that between shifts. Like stones grinding together(or a bad bearing noise if you know what that sounds like) people have told me that is the throw out bearing. Sounds like a big job. Is it ok to drive around with a bad throw out bearing?
A noise in between shifts would be a bad synchronizer assembly.
A synchronizer in a tranny changes the RPM of the shafts to match what they should be based on gear ratio and speed of the vehicle. If they are worn out from either normal wear and tear or abuse they will need to be replaced. Failure to replace them would lead to eventually loosing a gear and/or other future problems.
Synchronizers use a brass cone within them to apply as a brake to match RPMs. If this is worn it fails to operate properly. Not only that the brass will endup clogging the lubrication holes within the shafts to prevent further lubrication to other synchronizers and bearings. Our trannys don’t use a filter either and don’t have any provisions to either. The real reason why they fail is because they are shifted forcefully instead of with ease. They thing to remember about drag racing is the be quick on the feet but easy on the shifter.

Yes I do have a bad 4th gear sybchro but it doesn’t grind if i’m easy on it and most of the time there is onyl a light clunk. usualy from first to second I can hear that loud grinding noise but the gear doesn’t grind. But I can be sitting still and play with the clutch pedal too but it is a lot quieter than when i’m driving.
I replaced my tranny fluid not to long ago to see if it would help and it may have a little bit. I tried tightening that nut ont he clutch cable a good bit but it didn’t do anything.
I don’t have the money to buy synchros. I hear they are $$$:(
