I was planning on putting a B18C into my 91 Teg, and have ran into a problem. I read Dan’s Engine Swap guide, and am confused as hell. Alright, well the motor I ordered comes with a tranny (typical) so…I was hoping I could use the tranny that came with the motor, and not go out and buy a YSI, J1, S1 or other tranny. Can this swap be done (hydro tranny into original cable equipped car) without any modifications? Or, do I need to buy some conversion kit? Or, is it just not possible? Sorry if this is lengthy, just wanted to be as specific as possible. Thanks, Mark
first off, thank you for being specific! there are WAY too many people who ask one sentance questions and don’t give any details as to their specific car/engine… so, thanks.
now to the good stuff.
don’t think of this as a problem. In actuallity its a good thing. The vtec hydro tranny is something of great need out there—so sell that thing! Depending on the tranny, how many miles are on it… you can pick up $600-$1000 for it (way more than what a cable tranny will cost).
you can use the hydro tranny, but as dan mentions you will need a cable to hydro converter. I’ve never seen one of these used and i’m assuming its because its a waste of money. In reality there is no real reason to want the hydro over the cable—and therefore not worth all the extra effort and $$ needed.
I figure you can sell the hydro tranny for $500-$700 pretty easily, and pretty quickly. Then you can find a vtec cable tranny for $300-$650.
expect to pay $300-$450 for the 89-91 jdm b16a y1/s1/j1 tranny (ones w/ optional lsd could be slightly higher).
expect to pay $3500-$650 for a 92-93 gsr ys1 tranny
I know those price ranges are broad, but thats because the real prices are broad like that. There are deals out there, so don’t believe anyone that says a good cond. y1 for $300 doesn’t exist, cause i’ve seen it! But if you’re in a hurry then expect to pay more. To find the deals you’ll have to just keep checking everywhere till you get lucky.
