Tranny Swap help.

I’ve done a search on this and came up with nothing so here it is. I got a 93 integra (B18A, YS1 transmission) and I got an A1 transmission to go in if it fits. So that’s my question, is it gonna fit, or am I **** outta luck. The tag on this tranny says A1 but it looks identical to my YS1. My guess is that it’s gonna work but the ratios are a bit different. Am I right?? I don’t have the slightest clue about these and I’m told that the tranny came out of an Integra, but I’m not sure. Somebody help me please, I need to know if this is gonna work, it’s supposed to be going in my car tomorrow. Thanks.

A1 will work perfectly fine.

my car has an A1 in it. (I bought the car bone stock like that)

Ok, thanks, I’ll find out for sure in a couple hours.

like max said, it will work. however if you use the a1 you will also need a new clutch. the a1 uses a 90-91 teg clutch and the ys1 uses a 92+ clutch.

also, know that i you’re planning on swapping any internals it will not work. 89-91 and 92+ trannies are a lot different inside. Tranny cases are even different and not interchangable

Well, what exactly is the difference between the 2 clutches??

the pressure plates are the same (also, the release bearing and flywheel bearing are the same). the difference is in the disk. The 89-91 and 92+ b series input shafts are different sizes, if i remember correctly the 92+ is slightly larger. So, if you have an 89-91 tranny you will need a 90-91 teg clutch, a 92+ clutch will NOT fit on the shaft…

perfect, thanks a lot, I just got my 92-93 clutch, so I called and ordered a 90-91 clutch (I’ll send the 92-93 back). I’ll get the tranny in on Tuesday when I get the clutch (monday is a holiday here).

**edit- Just went out and checked, and you’re right, the disc off the 92-93 clutch is different. It has a tiny bit of play on the shaft.

why does 90-91 clutch always seem to cost more

91 and older clutches have a 25mm input spline, the 92+ have a 26mm input spline. I think the 91 and older clutches usually cost more because they aren’t in as high demand as 92+ clutches which are used on 92-01 trannies, I think.

you are completely correct.

new tranny or new synchros?

my tranny has been grindin on me mostly into 4th n’ now a bit into 3rd. i double clutch every now and then into gear, but i am getting tired of that. would it be wiser to get new synchros¿ or should i just get a new tranny¿ i was thinking of getting the tranny from a G3, like an ls, any problems arising from that¿

Getting New Synchros
Pros:
-they will be in perfect condition
Cons:
-you have to buy the whole gearset (~$300 per gear set). Meaning its ~$600 just for the parts. (however there may be a place on the net that sells just the synchros themselves. this would be MUCH cheaper. another member posted a site that sells tranny parts, but i’m not sure if they sell the synchros separately. and i’m not on my computer right now so i can’t link you to the site. either do a search or email me and i can send it to you later tonight).

Getting another Tranny
Pros:
-probably cheaper than getting new synchros for the old one
Cons:
-you have no idea about the condition of the synchros in this tranny. They may be very close to how bad your old ones are

another option is to try and find a busted tranny. maybe a hole in the case, or a bad 2nd gear synchro… something like that which would make it cheap. then you can just pull both trannies apart and use all the best parts.

a G3 tranny will not work in your car. it is hydro, your car is cable. don’t even bother considering it as an option, its a waste of your time and money.

RATIOS

I notice a lot of people say that all 1992s have YS1 trannies. Wasn’t only the GS-R equipped with the short ratio YS1?

If this is true, then I should just find a 1992 Integra transmission to put into my 1992 GS-R because my synchros are worn.

I know this would fit but would the ratios be the same??

yes only the 92-93 gsr was equipted with a “short ratio ys1.” But notice how i used quotation marks? all 92-93 teg trannies are labelled “ys1” the gsr’s just have shorter gearing than the rs/ls/gs. all the parts are the same except for the gears themselves.

I’ll trade you my beautiful shifting under 101,000 mi 93 LSS YS1 tranny straight up for your crappy run down GSR YS1. Hell, just cause I’m such a nice guy I’ll pay for shipping on both. How’s that sound?

dont know if this is any help at all or just a waist of time… I got a 91 teg and had the motor rebuilt about 30K ago… well the tranny just died after 180K. I just bought the Y1 tranny off of the B16 and Im swaping it out with my stock tranny but before i do im taking the 5th and the overdrive out of the stock LS and putting it in the Y1… can you say vroommm vroommm vroommmm… lol. also i bought (at the same time) a C.M. lightweight fly wheel and ACT street/strip race clutch. Thanks to Import Direct USA. I will soon have my baby on the road and will tell you all the (suttle) changes. lol. right.
