I have a B17A swap on my 91 LS but the transmission still LS, does it matter??? do I have to change it for a YS1? any difference?? can I upgrade my 91 LS tranny so it can be like a YS1 or better? any comment will be apreciated
thanks in advance.
you don’t HAVE to change to a ys1 (or other vtec tranny) but it is highly recommended.
In general if you are going all motor (whether its a vtec engine or not) you will want a vtec tranny. If you’re going turbo then you’d want to stick w/ the ls tranny.
your car will feel much better/faster, and will be faster if you switch to a vtec tranny. However you don’t have to use the ys1. You can pick up a jdm b16a tranny (j1/y1/s1) and that will work too. Just remember. If you use a 89-91 tranny you need a 90-91 clutch. If you use a 92-93 tranny, you need a 92-93 clutch.
Colin, doesn’t he already have a ys1 tranny? I know we’ve been over this before but how do you tell the difference between a non-vtec ys1 tranny and a vtec ys1 tranny? For that matter how do you tell the difference between all the other cable trannies?
i was under the impression that ys1 trannies were only in 92-93 tegs (whether it be vtec or not). And that the 90-91’s had an s1 tranny (non vtec). But i could be wrong about this (if anyone knows what it is for sure… please let me know, i like to have the facts straight).
as for telling the difference. I’m pretty sure there are only two ways to tell:
-drive the car, and feel the gearing
-or-
-pull the gears out and actually count the teeth to determine the gearing
You may be able to tell by the code on the tranny, but i don’t know where you’d get that info, or if it even works like that.
Sorry for bringing this dead thread back, but this is the closest thread that I’ve searched that clostly matched my question.
My '91 LS-Special tranny just had a rebuilt done. However, the shop told me something went wrong with some rod inside the tranny so now they can’t shift correctly into all gears. They took it as their fault and is willing to replace my tranny. So, the tech got a tranny for an unspecified model of '91 Integra. Everything was good except the clutch disc wouldn’t fit. He said the spline on the new tranny was bigger than the one I had and he’ll need to get a new clutch disc to fit.
My questions are the following:
-
Is the LS-Special tranny different than the regular LS tranny? I know the Honda/Acura’s Special edition cars usually use the higher model’s tranny/engine for the same base-model price. If that is the case, which tranny does the LS-Special actually use?
-
With the unknown model of the tranny, anyone know the difference between the GS/LS/RS trannies in '91? I guess if I find out which one has a bigger spline, then that would be my answer to the tranny at hand?
-
Any other suggestion to what I could do to improve autox/track time in terms of the gearing choices since the tranny is all apart? I read something about using GS-R tranny or the b-16a tranny and put the LS 5th gear in? Which year’s GS-R tranny would fit in my car w/o major mods to mounting or clutch assembly?
-
Redline MTL fluid or the dino 10-30 oil?
Thanks in advance! Trying to get my car back on the road… argh… been too long…
EDIT: I’ve purchased this car last year as the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner couldn’t tell me much about the history other than normal maintenances…
I have the same car. And from what I know the clutch assembly would be the same as any other 91 tranny’s.![]()
i have a 91 ls-e and i’m getting a b16a engine and is my tranny not going to work with the engine, meaning the clutch or is everything compatible where i don’t have to change anything tranny wise? or do i have to get a new clutch 92-93?
