Type-R Cams

I want to buy Type-R cams for my 1992 GSR. Which are better, Civic R or Integra R cams? What is the usual price for each cam? Are they worth the money? What are the benefits of having Type-R cams? Is there a big horsepower gain?

first off, i’m gonna use abreviations: ctr= civic type r itr= integra type r

ctr cams are better, they will give you noticably more power.

truth is that the itr and ctr exhaust cams are identical. Its the ctr intake cam that is better than the itr intake cam.

so, you could buy a ctr intake cam, and an itr exhaust cam (this would be the same as getting a full set of ctr cams).

You will want to buy the itr valvetrain (or other upgraded valvetrain) to accompany the cams. That way you can rev higher easier and safer (you need to rev higher to take full advantage of these cams).

As for prices. Check out www.jdmhondaparts.com I forget the exact prices, but they are decent. If you look around you can find better deals on places like www.ebay.com www.thepartstrader.com and www.recycler.com as well as various for sale message boards (like the one we have here at g2ic).

i was thinking about getting new cams as well. So even with a 92 GS-R (which redlines at 8rpm) you need an upgraded valvetrain? How much higher can you rev safely on an ITR/CTR drivetrain? thanks

well, i dont think you need the valvetrain if you plan on reving to the stock redline. but if you want to rev higher then i think its needed (or at least a really good idea).

but really you’ll have to ask someone else. In fact i’d like to know too.

how high does the ITR or CTR rev? 8,500?

yeah, pretty much, the consensus is that fatter cams are fine up to the original redline. beyond that, you need springs and/or retainers, depending on how big the cam is and how high you go. i think ITRs redline at 8400 and CTRs at 8600, but on the best motoring videos i have, the dudes all shift at like 9000. that’s probably when the fuel cuts out. i don’t think the cams make power way up there, but it must be fun to shift that high anyway!

I know a guy (Nick) that is selling a complete set of new ITR valve springs and slightly used 01 ITR cams (same as CTR) for $550. If anyone is interested, send e-mail here neek@aracnet.com . You can rev safely to the stock limiter fine with the ITR or CTR cams, but if you plan on revving higher, the ITR valve springs are needed. The cams stop making power at about 8500rpm. We took Jeff’s car to the track (CTR on B17A with ITR valve springs) and when we took it up to 9000rpm, his time actually got worse and you could totally feel the power drop off. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best of luck.

hey dan, i’m kinda confused… so with the ITR (or upgraded) valve springs, you can rev higher than the stock limiter (to 9K)… but then you lose power and actually get slower times? so is it better to just not rev past the stock limiter when driving on the track? is it just the fact that you CAN safely rev higher w/ the upgraded valvetrain?

Well, if you want to rev to 8500rpm, I would get the ITR valve springs. The cams do make power to there. But if you are only going to rev to 8k, the GSR valve springs will suffice. With the ITR valve springs you are good to 9000rpm, although yes, the cams don’t make power up there.

cool thanks…

Dan im kind of interested in those ITR springs and Cams… are they worth the money … do they come with retainer’s ? what kind of HP gain should i expect? Also are crower cams way better than the ITR or CTR ?

Ryan

Ryan, the cams don’t come with retainers, but the ITR retainers are the same as all of the other B-series motors. It was a good deal, the cams sold yesterday. Type R cams typically go for about $375-$450. And ITR valve springs go for about $200 new. ITR cams new cost about $600. The whole package ended up going for $500 even. Sorry. I know of anohter guy that is selling some if you are interested.
