VTEC not working??

Hey all… since the weather has been warming up here in Canada I decided to change my oil (mobil1 synth), gear oil, plugs (NGK platinum), and clean my K&N. Well, I let the car warm up, then took her out. I’ve noticed that my VTEC doesn’t seem to be kicking in. Previously when it would engage it would pull harder and feel almost as though a low-level turbo kicked in. Now there seems to be no difference throughout the powerband… I mean it accelerates fine, but there is no distinctive VTEC engagement.

Any ideas?

dead solenoid?

… or vtec pressure switch
page 6-33 of the helms manual if you have it.

re-check your oil. if your oil pressure doesn’t go up enough ( or not enough oil ) it wont engage. hope that helps.

woops forgot about that. if i had v-tec i would of remember it but that fact does not apply to me too much. sorry

Check the ECU to see what code it’s throwing and go from there.

Also check the wire to the VTEC silenoid and make sure it has a good connection (mine came loose back in the day had no vtec life sucked haha). Check ur oil too

Knock sensor could be fried telling your engine not to switch to
V-TEC. Or what the others said.

i dont think your knock sensor does anything with vtec, it just retards your timing if you experience detonation. As long as your not running 8 octane i think you’ll be fine. I’ve had my knock sensor ‘disconnected’ (broke it when installing ITR mani) and i’ve had no problems, actually, my car tells me when it’s warm:: whenver the check engine light comes on! haha. HTH.

did you always run synthetic oil? and I think I’m pretty positive if the knock sensor is bad vtec won’t kick in. thats why you need to have a knock sensor for ls/vtec swaps.

helms mirror

I noticed the site for the helms manual was down, but I have it sitting on my ftp site at:

hope this helps,

I don’t know if you guys remember the little problem I had a while back with the water in the intake… heh Well anyways I finally got that taken care of and I put some oil additive in after I changed the oil to clean up the head and restore compression and this and that. Well when I put that additive in the oil my Vtec stopped working. It hasn’t been working for the past couple of weeks. I am gonna change my oil probably on Friday and see if that helps. Might have gotten clogged up? Vtec also won’t work if your oil is low.

Rob

have you checked to see if the oil is low?

I’ve notice … if the oil is low… the vtec does not kick in…
or if the car is not warmed up properly…
