Bah, forget that. It’s still weight, but it would be less clutter in the engine bay. Got a couple more questions though…My car rattles at WOT for some odd reason, and I’ve heard it might be the heat shield. Any idea how much it weighs? Also, is there anything else that could melt or be damaged as a result of no heat shield? How long have you guys been running without a heat shield?
No one has said anything about rims. How much do the stock 14’s weigh? Lightweight racing rims shold take off a good bit there.
True, I just always assumed the stock 14’s were pretty light. Anyone know the exact weight?
weight reduction is great! here’s a list of what I’ve done and hope to do
-no a/c system, everything is gone
-no p/s system, everything is gone
-no heat shields
-no rear wiper and motor assembly
-one front wiper (ricer style!) actually the other broke in a car wash
-no windshield squirters, lines or bottle
-lighter aftermarket header, intake, muffler, intake manifold, and hollow cat
-no spare, tools, or back seats
-redid vacuum lines and got rid of metal parts
-one horn
-all of stock intake system is gone, even the hard to get piece behind the bumper
-no hubcaps
soon to do…
-another carbon fiber hood(first one was stolen)
-traction system to replace front suspension pieces about 40lbs difference
-get benon front bumper mount, save 40lbs
-plastic one piece headlights
-light weight 8lb 15in rims
-lexan rear hatch and windows
-lighter race seats
-cut out pieces in rear bumper for air diffusion
-aem alternator pulley
-chop off a/c and p/s belt rings on stock pulley and balance
-light weight flywheel
-lighter battery
and that should be about all…I’ve taken out more stuff, just can’t remember…
oh,…stock steel weighs in at 14lbs for 14 inchers
hummm lighten car topic i remeber this from a while back a did a few thing too:
replace battery with 94-up and moved to trunk
removed backseats and everything behind it replaced with thin flat wood total weight 4 lbs
ditched stock seats (30 something lbs a piece) replace with 12 lb sparcos
removed ac (everything lines, condenser, compressor)
removed everyshield heat and brake type
2 rear tow hooks
all bs wiring
subs==gone
12 lb rims
also might not seem like a big issue but germans fill there tires with gas instead of air its called rifengas its cheap 5 dm a tire (2$2.50) and you never have to check the pressure.
don’t know total weight of car don’t even know if germans have truck scales but i’ll look for one to see how much it weighs
Where exactly is the “intake manfold lower support braket”
Alright, got a couple more questions. It’s still raining here in CA so I haven’t been able to start “Project Next Sunny Day.” But to those (novtec1, mechaniac, E-DA9) do you experience any after-effects from removing your undercar heatshield? Does the shifter get too hot or does anything melt on the underbody.
Where are the front tow hooks located? Do I need them?
The stock steel wheels weigh 14 lbs? What about the stock 14" alloys?
no hot shifter, nothing melts. i still got my front tow hooks. never know when she’s gonna get “flatbedded” . don’t know about the 14’s sorry:(
Yeah, thanx, cause I was thinking the other day, doesn’t our e-brake lock the back brakes? So wouldn’t the tow truck pick our cars up by the rear? I always leave it in neutral when I park, but what if I left it in gear, then they’d have to lift the front of the car right, or else it’d strip the gears? Anyone know exactly how towing a car works and what they do and stuff?
For all the hassle you are are going through to lose weight, keep in mind that large wheels/tires are heavy AND slower (usually) than stock 14 inch OEM wheels.

Oh I know. I love my stock 14" alloy rims. I don’t plan on ever getting rid of them, and if I do it’d be for a lighter rim. Rotational mass = bad.
E-DA9, I found that bracket near the left strut tower. It does look pretty hefty. So you took this off? Cause it holds a bunch of stuff, what did you do with all the wires and stuff? Just let them sit there?

I almost positive I know what you are talking about. I just took mine off. If it is the same one I am talking about, I just bound all the wires together and stuck them underneath the intake tube.

I just let it sit…
