Just wondering how much of a difference a tranny would make in my car…i know that the YS1 in a GSR is diffrerent than the YS1 in an LS, the GSR has shorter gearing…im also wondering what the difference would be in the YS1 to JDM Y1 tranny…does anyone know?
from people i’ve talked to there is a pretty big difference in feel if you swap to a vtec tranny. Member Dayuiz is running a ys1 on a relatively stock b18a, so he’d probably be the guy to talk to to see how much of a difference it made.
Waht am ilooking for in terms of the numbers i see for each gear?..sorry for sounding like a moron but im not familiar with the different numbers and whether im looking for higher or lower numbers per gear?

well, you can figure it out intuitively just by comparing gears. First start off w/ what you know… non vtec trannies have longer gears than vtec trannies. Now, look at the 1st gear for the non/vtec tranny (3.230) and compare with the 1st gear of a vtec tranny (for example the Y1: 3.166). So, from that you intuitively know that the larger the number, the longer the gearing.
of course the final drive has something to do with it as well. and that i’m not sure about. But the final drive on the two trannies you’re talking about are the same.
also, here is a chart that G2Guru made up of the different speeds for different 5th gears: Speed in 5th Gear

awesome feedback man, i really appreciate it it seems that Y1 will be o.k. to go in my teg but maybe i should consult Dan (G2GURU) about the tranny, he seems to know quite a bit about them…by the way that link didn’t work for me.
When I put my GSR YS1 on my B18A1 it made a huge difference. It makes your car feel like it has a lot more torque. I’ve got an ACT Stage 1 clutch and stock flywheel. Redline comes a lot faster and its a lot more fun to drive.
If you want to get an feeling for what it would feel like do this: Go out and drive your car and imagine that while you’re in 1st gear, that would be second gear with a GSR YS1. When you’re in 2nd gear, that would be 3rd. When you’re in 4th gear, that is about what its like driving on the freeway in 5th with a GSR YS1. At 4,000 rpms in 5th, I’m at 72-73mph.
Go ahead and swap your tranny, you won’t regret it.
