I’ve got worn valve guides and they leak oil when the engine gets cold and sits for 7+ hours or so. Yes, I’m sure its worn valve guides. What’s involved with replacing them or should I swap the whole head?
Don’t swap the whole head unless you just want to upgrade the entire head. I’m almost positive you will have to pull the head to replace the guides. You should pull the head yourself then have a machine shop replace the guides/seals.
How much would it cost to have a machine shop replace the guides?
It is better of replacing the head. Swapping guides aree quite expensive.
Guides aren’t that expensive. Should be able to have guides and seals replaced for $200 all said and done. Don’t ignore bad guides, or else…
Hmm, $200 - I could buy a used head with good guides for that.
$200, you could buy a used 92-93 head w/ intake manifold, or a b18b w/ intake manifold for that price. And not only would you now have good valve guides, but also an extra 7-10hp (more if you already have an aftermarket header).
I found a site that sells, bronze valve guides and some type of coated valves, for HIGH Rpm use, Is bronze stronger than stainless steel, I have a friend that works on heads, so he is going to do the work. But i want to know before i bought them, I also plan to Port and Polish the head, and swap vavles with Type R style (It’s a b16 head)

Valve Guides - Intake + Exhaust
• Made of stronger material (bronze) than factory OEM stainless steel valve guides.
• Material allows less friction to be made while valve is working. Less fricton=more power!
That’s what they put for these valves guides.
and for those special valves:
Supertech Racing Valves
• Racing valves with a black nitrided coating which reduces friction at high rpm’s.
• Applications any B-series head.
