What is the "Proper" way to disconnect PS?

I’m thinking I want to disconnect my power steering. There is a back road I take to go around traffic jams and the average speed on it is about 70mph. Well, this road is bumpy and windy and generally sucks ballz. When I’m going that fast, the car gets a little loose and I’m thinking taking the power steering out will help me keep control.

So my question is, is there a proper way to disconnect it? I’ve heard of people taking the belt off, and then the resivor over flows. I think I’ll take the belt off to try it out, but then I’d like to take the whole system out. Unfortunitally I don’t understand this system too well and I’m not sure what is involved in completely taking it out.

Any help would be great.

well, like you said, you should remove the belt first at least to get a feel for it. Some people hate it, personally i love it. And don’t worry about the reservoir overflowing, i’ve had mine removed for months wthout any incident.

do a search at www.theoldone.com they have a little writeup on how to remove the pump itself and connect some type of loop to keep the rack lubricated. It didn’t sound too difficult when i read it awhile back. I just gotta find the time and motivation to actually do it.

I think taking out the resevoir and pump should do just fine… there’s that big long hose that’s left running down the driver’s side under the hood, but it doesn’t get in the way of anything. I just left it hanging there… for over a year now, and no problems…

So how do I take the belt off? Do I just pull it, get some slack and take it off? Do I need to cut it?

there are 3 (i believe its 3, but it could be 2, its been awhile since i did it) bolts that hold the power steering pump to the engine itself. Loosen these bolts, but do not remove them. The bolts go through slots, not just holes. So, now slide the pump towards the back of the car to give you slack in the belt. Remove the belt, then tighten the bolts back down, wala!

I did my 2 days ago:

There are two bolts on the side of the power steering pump. Size 14 or size 12 socket. Well one you can see and the lower one u cant. I usually have to put the rachet between my headers to get to it. There is also a top adjustment bolt. Its like a 10 or 12 socket.

Well loosen up the top bolt first…don’t completely take it off but loosen it up a few turns to have enuf room to take off the belt NO CUTTING OF THE BELT NECESSARY!

Then after u have that done, you will have to loosen up the top and bottom side bolts. Then the ps pump will loosen up. Remove the belt and retighten the side bolts so they don’t fall out.

Keep the belt for later use if u want to put it back on. Your done! Have fun.

What do you mean by the car is getting loose? Do you mean is is jumping around on the road? If that is the case on a bumpy road, removing the power steering would make it harder to control. If it is not there, the wheels will tend to track more with the bumps in the road. The pwer steering would actually help you steer over the bumps and ruts.
