i was just wondering what oil and oil weights everyone uses…
right now i have some Schaeffer Supreme 7000 Synthetic Blend 15w-40 in my car… i hate it…
my buddy was like “use this stuff, its the best u can get” ($3 a quart so not too expensive)
my car has been running on regular oil for so long and now this synthetic stuff is cleaning all the build up on the seals and such and now i’m burning oil
i’ve always liked my Castrol GTX 20w-50 that i’ve used in the past, so i think i’m gonna use it in my teg… hopefully the heavier weight will cut down on the oil usage.
There’s a huge thread on H-T all about oil. I’ve heard alot of good stuff about the new Valvoline Max-Life which is supposed to be for car’s with over 75k on the clock but it seems that many of the “experts” are recommending it for all cars. I’m on my 1st fill of 10w-30 Max-Life.
Wondering if anyone has used the 0w-30 weight oils? I saw on Mobil 1’s spec sheets that these oils can withstand heat as good as a 10w-30 weight oil, but is thinner … therefore smoother, easier revving engine??

From what i’ve understood in the honda-tech thread about oils, the 0w-30 breaks down faster meaning it wouldn’t give the same protection it did when you first put it in therefore you should change the oil more often.
ive since been using 5w-30 valvoline maxlife, and i havent noticed any loss of oil. so i guess its been about 2 weeks, and i previously went through about a quart a month or so of 10w30 cheapo oil. the oil also looks brand new.
seems like its helping but its really too soon to account for anything
93integraRS i would refrain from using 20w-50… thats wayyy heavy. try the 10w30 maxlife or castrol high mileage. dunno if they have anything thicker but if they do i guess you could step down slowly. so not only will you benefit from a better sealing oil, but gain a few horses from the thinner oil =D
oh and you might wanna do a compression check to see if youve got a leak
I picked up the Mobil1 0W30 from target on sale for 2.49 a quart. I can’t tell a difference. Maybe a little smoother at startup, but not enough to go bragging about. I will probably change it at 2000 miles so I still got a good deal. I will try the Max Life though
brands i switch between from:
halvoline, quaker state, pennzoil, chevron oil, exxon oil and mobil oil. all 5-30. no difference, i change the oil every 3000. no synthetics.

slightly off topic, but… our cars tend to “use” a little oil as the mileage goes on the motor anyways. a good thing to do is check up your oil consistently (like everytime you put in gas) and to use a weight that won’t be used up as quickly by your own specific motor. checking oil level is probably the best and cheapest form of insurance you can have for your motor. low oil, dry spots, oil starvation… all bad bad bad.
yeah i agree… i check mine on a regular basis…
that GTX 20w-50 is working great in my car… on my long trip over this last weekend i averaged about 31 mpg.
