and how does it make a difference. i rev to 8k, 101,000 miles. what does the difference mean as far as 10w30, or 5w30, syntehetic or non…not to bright in this area. thanks in advance
I use Pennzoil 5W-30 normally … i tend to use a bit more oil now, so I switched to 10W-30 to protect the internals a little better.
Valvoline Racing VR-1 20w/50, not recommended unless you’re running a rebult motor with aftermarket internals
Steve, how many kms you have on your car?
I have 139,000…think it might be good to use 10W30??
hehe … I got 175000 kms Darren … lol … but the motor has 150000kms on it (replaced) … you should be fine, as long as you are not burning too much oil.
whats teh dif between 10w30 and 5?
Good idea to use Synthetic with 139,000kms though?
No, don’t use synthetic … I would not use it unless you have a fairly new, or brand new motor (rebuilt etc) … synthetic oil in an older motor tends to cause more problems, than it does good … takes more vigilance in engine maintenance.
RedStarGsr: I am not too familiar with engine oil weights, but I know that the 10w is a little thicker than the 5w, and will last longer (won’t burn as fast) … all motors burn oil, I guess you just need to know how much oil you burn, and what you want for performance … a lighter oil is better for performance (freer-flowing internals)…
Anyone else got any info to add?
this link should explain differences between the oils…and then some
i’ve used sythentic for the past year, mobile one, and the car runs great, or even a little better, it leaks a little since it’s sythentic, but it runs great, it’s sorta better to use sythentic on older engines
I’ve used Mobile1 Synthetic for 37,000km an I love it. I have it changed every 5000km and I heard that the oil is good for more than that but the filter is not. Car now has 137,000km and I redline it 6 times a day.
wassup dan it’s rexxx. well man i use mostly quaker state synthetic cuz it doesn’t need to be changed as much as regular, but right now i have mobil 1 5w30 and that seems to work ok
I use 10W 30 also (Castrol GTX). Just because it’s a little more viscous than the 5W 30 that the manual says to use. I too would not recommend using synthetic on an older engine. I learned from my shop teacher a couple of years ago that if you have an old car with the original motor, chances are the previous owner (or you, whoever it may be) used regular oils and the internals have already bonded to that type of oil, using synthetic may harm it in the long run. If you’re not a hard track racer, then I would suggest just using your basic 5W 30 or 10W 30 weight oils and do your regular oil changes.
100% synthetic 5W-30
castrol gtx 10w-30 synthetic!!!
oil
Pure Dinosaur 10w30
Changed RELIGIOUSLY every 2500 miles (or less if I have the time or money )

I normally use Castrol GTX 10w30, but on my last change I switched to 5w30 because I drive my car really hard and wanted to give it a little thinner oil for a while to work with. I never use synthetic. I would only use that on a new motor.

Mobil 1, never have used anything else.
I use mobil one 10w 30
Mobil 1 5-30 synthetic
I first put Mobil 1 synth. in at 90K miles and have used it exclusively since then. The oil pressure sending unit developed a leak…otherwise no problems.
