what sleeves should i use?

what sleeves would you recommend going with on a b20b? I am trying to boost my motor to 20 pounds and have heard different things about different brands. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Benson gets my vote!

Or you could always support a G2IC member and talk to quickDA6 about ERL. :ohyeah:

any idea how much those guys go for?

Benson is around $900 to $1000 return shipped, just for the sleeves.

awesome. thanks, for the info and i will do some research on these guys. appreciate all the info.

Check out erlperformance.com. The price is 1500 shipped, but you get waaaaay more for your money than anyone else: bore/hone/deck/align bore&hone/bearings, and the most precision machining in the industry. Honestly i could go on all day on how ERL is better than anyone else, but i dont need to. The best products sell themselves, im here to more eductae people

Benson annoys me for a few reasons:

  1. they say align bore and hone is never needed, if the sleeves are done right.

This is horseshit, i have had 10+ STOCK blocks that needed at least an align hone. Mind you these were motors with less than 100k and hadnt been abused. So when you remove the old sleeves, then mains are going to move due to the fact that aluminum is weak like that. That is really the biggest issue. No matter who you get your sleeves from, get at least the hone done. Not doing this causes premature bearing and oil pump failure. But ole benson says that “doesnt need to be done”. Call me crazy, but i want my customers engines to last for 80k+.

  1. They say Benson himself does every single block himself, no one else touches it.

Man, if anyone is naive enough to believe this, call me for some waterfront property in Utah. They do turn out alot of shit and beleive me, you need several people to do a decent amount of blocks.

  1. The shipping…

Boxing up a block is a pain in the sack. ERL sends a crate specifically for your block wether it be b, h , or k. The return shipping is paid, so all you have to do is drop in your block, crank, mains, and pistons, and close the lid. then give it to any ups man, and you are all good.

  1. They have been “doing it the longest”

What a weak marketing technique, does doing it the longest mean you are the best? Fuck no! I am always testing new innovative products for companies, and these are the type or products that make our industry thrive. Not the old school shit

And lastly go look at the video of their sleeving process on the site…No one else has a video of their process, because frankly you wouldnt send your block to them if you saw how it really is. FYI This is the only place that does FULL-RACE and Endyn’s BLocks. Im in pretty good with those guys and we all know at this stage of the game, quality is the issue, not cost. If anyone ever needs info on the process, feel free to call the shop 302-798-7000.

Josh

awesome! thanks quickda6 for some very usefull information. i don’t want to make any calls just yet because i gotta save for a month or so before i can get it done, but that was a helluva post! i really really appreciate you taking the time to help me out!

don’t leave out AEBS and Darton those 2 companies are very good too. and you can always look into Golden eagle which everyones heard there share of bad things including me, but since they changed there sleeve design from Godzilla sleeve’s to HD sleeve’s they haven’t had many problems if any.

QuickDA6-- where’s that Benson video of the sleeve process? I only found pics of the process on H-T.

No problem man, i just try to steer people in the right direction. Even if you dont buy it from me, i just wanna see you get the right shit. Please stay away from golden eagle, unless you want jb weld in your block and at least a month of downtime. Like i said, feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Can I sleeve my B17?? because I didnt see the specs for B17

ive also heard good things about z10. check their site, www.z10eng.com

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME??? Those are AEBS sleeve’s!! it says it in bold letters right underneith it. Z10 doesn’t make sleeve’s!!! they are an authorized dealer of AEBS. AEBS sleeve’s are the shiznit to me.

I would go Golden Eagle but thats just because I know some people there …

I have tuned several HD sleeved cars and they have been running for well over 7k miles no problems as of yet …

AEBS doesnt make sleeves either…They use Darton as well. I did two blocks through them, and wont do them ever again. There is no video of bensons process, nor anyone other than ERL. They know they have the best, and arent afraid to show it.

Sure can…same as any other b vtec block…

Behold, a pic of the most important thing you can do to your block. Which the other manufacturers say “doesnt need to be done”, because it will add alot more to their price.

what was wrong with AEBS? I don’t know what happen to your blocks but everyone here in SD is loving those blocks and have no problems with them. matter fact my freinds are using there blocks. 213hp all motor and 773hp Boosted/NOS. no failure that I know of from there sleeves. Don’t know any 1 who uses ERl on this coast, or at least in SD. They look almost like AEBS sleeve’s. closed deck design. very solid. I haven’t decided who is going to be doing my block yet but if it has to be as of right now it would be AEBS. I know there process and they don’t have to make a documentary about it. I have to look into erl blocks.

check this out. old discussion. it’s all opionated. whatever you like, you go and get. there all have there strong points.

sleeves

ur best bet if your going that much boost is to go with Darton sleeves they are the best or a company in cali called RS machine they do a real good job

Im not neccesarily saying there is anything wrong with AEBS, but closed deck blocks arent good for a car that drives more than just at the track. The design is just inferior, and old-school at that. And im not referring to my “boys” engines. I have sold easily over 100 sleeved blocks in the past 4 years, and have done plenty of research/testing on this subject. Alot of the products we sell have a very low profit margin, but its not all about the dollar, know what i mean. I will only sell something i would or have used in my own cars, and a closed deck AEBS block sure isnt one of em. But then again, ERL is a relatively new process, although they did 2+ years of development before they even released their blocks.

But as stated, everyone is gonna tell you something different…To me though, i would want the people that sleeve blocks for HONDA’s own race team, doing my customers and my own blocks. Not to mention having the fastest car on the planet on gas using their block.

But im just talking away :blah: People that want the absolute best, buy ERL, plain and simple.

this was posted from 99hybrid_hatch on H-T so you wouldn’t think I was talking out of my ass:

99hybrid_hatch: Hole closed deck runs hotter is a myth…I have a DART block and daily drive it without any issues at all…I also have over 6 sleeved closed deck block running around my town that I built that have not had cooling issues at all…

Darton sleeve’s don’t suck!!! ERLperformance uses them, so does AEBSedit I was told that they get there’s through LA sleeve now. but they used to se Darton, and Darton in thier own applications. why is Dartons blocks a “CLOSED DECK” design? and VERY similar to AEBS? I’ve never heard of a sleeved block overheating or warping. must be doing something wrong.

the whole thing about this sleeving thread is stupid. we’ve got this topic coming up in H-T every week. go and research all the comanies yourself. don’t settle for what others say is the best, go and find out for yourself. it would be much easier for you to make your own decision then to have 2 people arguing who’s sleeve’s are best. like I said in my post prior to this, all sleeve’s have there stong points, so with that said, go do your own research.
