Ok I here turbo gos good with LS transmission and b16 with all motor but the shop im working with says stay with b16 with turbo. What do you guys think i got a b16a head and a ls block. I just started my ls-vtec turbo im going to build it right not just throw shit togeather. I just lost my Ls transmission and i want to pick the right one so i do not got to buy two transmissions thanks guys and let me know what you think.
short geared b16 is your best bet
its all about putting the power your motor makes to the ground effciently, and a shorter gear tranny will do that for you
Sounds like LS Tranny to me!
Well, it depends on your setup. It doesnt seems like your setup would go good with the short gear tranny.Yours would be great with the LS because it dooesnt seem you’re not gonna have LSD or a possibly BIG turbo. The LS tranny will give the turbo enough time to spool and at the same time give you the Traction you need! Power is Great, BUT without Traction there’s no point!
a shorter gear will allow the turbo to spool faster NOT slower. blaming traction instead of the driver is not right.
LS. Longer gears make for a easier to drive, funner to drive (yes I know funner is not a word) more usable power band.
This question is about as ridiculous as the which engine should I turbocharge question.
I agree with Haberdasher, this is a pretty subjective question. You need to define what you want the car to do before you can really answer this question…
However, if I was going to go Boost, I would definitely use an LS transmission; no questions asked.
The reason for this is that having the longer gears of the LS tranny will allow you to spend more time in each gear under boost before hitting your redline. To me, this is appealing, and would be more fun to drive.
As juiced2ndgenteg said, a short-geared tranny will allow the turbo to spool faster; however, my problem is that you might find it hard to not bury your tach in the redline all the time…
Hope this helps a bit…
Why do people continually buy into this shit train of thought. Longer in boost…blah, blah, blah…that’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. When I started out, I bought into this theory as well though, until i learned better and thought about it a little more.
A short geared tranny has NOTHING to do with how fast or slow your turbo spools. If you reach 10 psi at 4k rpms…doesnt matter which tranny is on the car. Honestly…come on, use your brain a little. How will a tranny relate to exhaust flow?
my problem is that you might find it hard to not bury your tach in the redline all the time…
Wow, what a problem to have…
Isnt the point of boosting an engine to get more power? Which means you would get to red-line faster, which means you’ve gone farther in a faster amount of time…? Yeah…I want to build and engine to go faster but limit myself to getting there because I use a longer gear tranny… :bang:
I’ve had both trannies…and there is NO comparison. It’s night and day, oil and water. A shorter geared tranny will put the power your engine makes to the wheels better than a longer geared LS tranny will.
Search a little on Honda-Tech if you want a more technical answer with physics equations and shit…it has been absolutely EXHAUSTED over there as well as here.
The only limitation in my eyes is top speed. My YS1 tops out at 123, 7100 rpms in 5th gear. Kinda sucks but I can still get to 123mph faster than when i had my S1 tranny.
Whoa dude…rage…calm down…are you off you medication again :worry: :chill:
This just goes to show the rediculousness of the question. Xenorcon is thinking about max performance while some of us are thinking about fun to drive and subjective results.
I don’t consider having to swim through all my gears to be fun but what the hey, others apparently do…
Yeah, sorry…a little on edge.
But personally, my teg isnt a MAX performance vehicle and the short gears are much more ‘fun’ - just not when I am cruising in 5th on the highway
i kinda hate my YS1 5th gear on the highway too…never topped it but maybe 130@8000 rpm…but love those short gears, get use to them and u’ll never go back to long gears
Since he’s doin the ls/vtec setup, and he says he going to do it right, he’s probably goin to balance the crankshaft correct? This would raise the redline of the ls, and my question is that the ls tranny would still be good, being that it wasn’t made for that rev limit? I’m just a little confused on this.
Ok you guys i plan on making 300-350hp. Im looking in the rang of 15psi or so. I have a b16a head and a LS bottom built. So there is alittle more info Im trying to get in the 12,s or 11,s. thanks guys
+1
this is why you buy big DR’s…
go with the ys1 if you can, especially since you have a vtec head, you have another 1000+ rpms over us nonvtec guys, so you wont be topping out your car at lower speeds.
i have a gsr hydro trans on my boosted ls, and its so butter. i shift at 7k and i drop back into the next gear at about 5000-5200rpms, that means that im never under 200whp and only under 200tq at redline. with a long geared ls trans, i would be coming back into gear at like 4500 ish, where i only have about 150hp. the shorter gearing allows you to stay in your powerband better and lets you run a larger turbo for more top end hp and not have to worry about lag.
OK:
Short Gear Tranny+LSD=
Long Gear Tranny-LSD=
Dunno about that one. I blew up my stock differential after just a few months
shmaptoe, what kind of times are you running if you don’t mind me asking? I’m considering a ls build if I start to have problems with the lsvtec. I don’t mean just motor problems either…I’m not Bill Gates. Plus this is my daily, so I’ll slap a stock head on that hoe and ride out if I have to.
how about an LS tranny with a itr final drive and lsd?
