Hey all, I am new to this site, and I must say I find it very helpful. I just bought a 93 integra LS.
I have this loud humming coming from the rear of the car. It is most evident at about 60mph, and close to non-existent at 80mph.
It is not coming from the engine, becuase it will still hum if I push in the clutch and coast. Along with the humming there is a slight vibration. My first guess was tires, but I replaced them and the problem still is there. it doesnt seem to be affecting performance right now, but it isnt right and I want to fix it. can anyone help?
oh, and can someone tell me the difference between a LS and LS special?
A humming sound is almost always related to the wheel bearing. But to make sure have you checked all the basics: brakes, rims, tires, suspension, etc.
Which year LS-S are you talking about? Basically the all the '93 LS-S had over the LS was a spoiler, alloy wheels, leather interior and optional factory security system.

great. thats what I figured. Any idea how long it may hold out from this point? Effects of not changing it soon enough? ways to determine which wheel its originating from? difficulty of changing them?

Ok, I guess I have the LS-S then. (although no security and no power locks!?)
I don’t know if front and back wheels are the same or not, but one way to check the front wheels is to jack up the car, grab the wheel, and try to kinda wiggle it up and down. If the wheel bearing is bad it will move a little bit.
For the back wheels, that “wiggling the tire” test doesn’t work… at least not for me… The wheels didn’t budge one bit, but it kept humming on the highway… You’ll just have to take off the wheel hub to see if it’s bad or not… and you WILL have to buy the whole wheel hub assembly… they don’t sell the bearings separately…
Just go to the dealer for the hub… it’s actually cheaper there then at Napa… It’s $150 at the dealer… NAPA wanted $170!!
And if you want to replace the wheel bearing nut and cap on the hub assembly, expect to pay around $20… it’s a good idea if it was all rusted up like mine was…
My first time I changed the wheel bearings, it took me 5-6 hours cause I had never taken off the brake calipers before… If you know how to do this, it shouldn’t take that long…
Be aware, tho, that you WILL need a HUGE socket to take the wheel bearing nut off!! Can’t remember exactly, but I think it was either 1-1/2" or 1-3/4"… And of course, you’ll need a long socket wrench, too… I Had to jump on that wrench a few times before it came loose.
So I have to pull both rear hubs and you think I will be able to visually tell which one is the damaged? Oh well i guess one advantage to buying the whole hub is I dont have to mess with setting and removing the bearings, but $150? ouch!
do you guys think I would be safe with a used one?? I mean, these arent really prone to wearing out are they? Looks like I may be able to get a used one for under $50.
depends on how long it was used / how many miles the original car it was on had… mine’s lasted me a good 150,000 miles… but if you DO get it, just make sure you grease it up real good with some high-temperature grease…
doesn’t seem like it could… there’s that HUGE nut (only one tho) that holds the entire wheel (and wheel bearings) to the car… When you take off the wheel and wheel hub, you’ll probably agree that there’s NO WAY that thing could EVER fall off…
Chances are more likely that the bearings will SEIZE UP before the wheel can fall off… But I don’t know how long you’d have to drive B4 the bearings will actually seize… if it even does…
I drove on my bad bearings for a good 10,000+ miles B4 changing the hub… the humming noise just finally got too annoying…
