By older do you mean the 90-91 gears, or what? I mean, they are all old in my mind.
if it’s 91 or older, any tranny for a b series motor has internals that are interchangable. I would NOT reccomend replacing y1 parts with s1 or j1 parts out of a 91 or older ls tranny- your gear raios will go to $hit and you will hate life. It’s not worth it, but it is do-able.

The main differences from what I understand is the main and counter shafts in the 88-91 trannys are smaller in diameter than the shafts in the 92+ trannys. That is why the gear sets dont work out between those two types of trannys.
The differentials are also different between them. From what I understand on that is the speedo gear on the 88-91 trannys is actually part of the diff as to where the speedo gear on the 92+ trannys can be pulled off and swapped around.
I have been inside of a few 92+ trannys but I have yet to crack open a 88-91 tranny for anything so what I know about the internals of them is all from word of mouth and research that I have done.
That should pretty much answer everyones questions thus far. If any of you have something else that you would like to know just ask and hopefully I will be able to answer your questions for you.
hey, um, BR you weren’t driving in Beaverton, OR yesterday were you? I saw blacked tails, similar rims, same color G2 driving right near my school yesterday. . . .
