which cams best (yes, it's me again)

alright, i’m looking at a few different offers on cams…

  1. p73 cams from an LS, ran for 2k miles… – “11hp cam”
  2. 97 b18b cams for $50.00
  3. crowers for my car (b18a) for $350.00 from same guy as the b18bs
  4. aem “the new style” for $150, don’t know if new/used

tell me what you guys would do, would it be worth it to spend the extra money on crowers, as opposed to the cheaper AEMs?

Are you talking about cams or cam gears? AEM doesn’t make cams

  1. p73 is the code for the type r right? I know p73 pistons are itr pistons–so i would assume p73 cams would be itr cams. And if this is the case they will not work in your non vtec engine

2)the b18b cams should yeild 5-8hp. the full 12hp can be made up if you get a b18b head and 92+ intake manifold, and a header as well.

personally I’d save the $50 and save for some real cams.

3)This is what i’d do. Crower 403’s.

  1. AEM doesn’t make cams for non vtec engines, in fact i don’t think they make any cams.--------they do make cam gears though.

I haven’t heard of the AEM cams either, but maybe they’re the new thing AEM came out with. If you’ve ever seen the ad, they have the glowing thing inside the cars engine bay saying something like “the new **** from AEM” or something like that.

Anyway I have the Crower 404s and I like them a lot, very streetable in my opinion. I need to get my ECU chipped though, so I can have a higher redline b/c I can only shift at 6800 or so. and they make power up to a least 7500.

so everyone feels that crower is the best, either the 403/404 model?

also, i talked about “bullfrogs” the guy trying to sell them to me said they produce more power than the crower, is this true, and is it worth the extra money?

FINALLY, what price should i expect for crowers, $350 shipped (403s) and 404s, how much?

i hate leaving such long posts, but i’ve got all these questions…

How is the idle on those 404’s? Did it add a lot power?

hold on a sec, crower 403s are cam shafts, not cam gears correct?

upgrading the camshafts yields more power than cam gears, correct? i have been saying “cams” and had been referring to cam gears.

do new cam gears yield big gains, or is it the cam shafts?

the crower camshafts are to swap in when you upgrade you engine i.e NOS,Vtec.,making your engine able to withstand the power upgrade. The cams i heard will give you somewhere from 5-8hp increase if your currently using the 90-91 cams gears.

Someone correct if im wrong,i was bored and wanted to try to help.

Will the ITR cam gears fit in our cars?

Ryan

From what I hear the idle on 403’s are pretty beefy, so I’d expect 404’s to be pretty damn beefy! DO NOT get 404’s if you’re not going to spend the extra money on upgraded valve springs.

The idle isn’t bad with the 404’s, right now my cam gears are sitting at +1,-1 and the idle fluctuates from 600-900 or so, with a mean as hell lope. The lope sounds so bad a$$ coming from a four cylinder. The lope sounds like a V8 with cams. But I’ve had my cam gears set at 0,+2.5 and it will idle perfectly at 750 and sit there, it doesn’t have the lope sound as much, but definitely doesn’t sound like any stock honda. As for gains, the car pulls like a mad bitch from 3000 up to 6800. but i haven’t experience the full affect b/c i know i am making power above 6800, but i have to shift. I need a higher rev limiter (6900 right now).

x4evawizex: Cams yeild more horsepower over cam gears. You can put cam gears on stock cams, I did this and gained a dyno proven 3 hp over the whole power band, and 10lbs of torque from 2000 to somewhere around 4000. But the main use of cam gears is to tune your aftermarket cams (crowers) so that you see the peak amount of power out of them.

As for price: I paid $707 for the 404’s w/ dual valve springs and titanium retainers. thats shipped from crower. Then I had them installed $$$.

phat ac: Not really, the cams are a power upgrade in themselves. There are certain cams that are made to be used with nitrous and turbos. As for the ITR cam gears, You wouldn’t see any power gains from swapping the cam gears, the ITRs’ are non-adjustable. Any aftermarket cam gear would be better b/c it allows you to tune the cams.

so if i go camshafts, i should get upgraded valve springs as well, correct? i plan to go nitrous later, will the crower 403s work well with nitrous?

how much for 403s (is it worth it to go with the 404s?), and then the dual valve springs? also, what price did you pay for install? did you have to leave your car overnight?

thanks for all the help, i know this is getting dragged out, but i want to make sure i get the best for my buck

It’d be better to talk to crower about the nitrous on the 403’s, but I’d say you could.

The 403 and 404 camshafts are the same price = $396.04
I bought a package for the dual valve springs and titanium retainers = $300.70

Im not sure what the installation costs in total, I had them install a new timing belt with the cams. But i did have to leave my car with them for a few days.

x4evawizex,

if you’re interested in crower 403 cams, i’m selling them. i got it on the “parts exchange” forum after i posted my wrecked g2 on the “general discussion” forum.
