Hey guys i need a lil bit of help on which head to get. Im am going to stick w/my b18 block because i love the torque, and i only have 70k miles on the motor!!!, But i am goin to replace the head and was wanted to get yalls educated opinion on which head to use the type r, crv or the b16a? Thanks guys
type r=vtec
crv=non-vtec
b16a=vtec, nearly identical to type r (type r is based on b16a)
you’re doing ls/vtec, right? i think it requires a lot more work than simply dropping in a vtec motor. just my opinion.
im not droppin in the “whole” motor im just gonna use a different head
You wouldn’t see any appreciable gains using a CRV head, so I’m going to assume that you would like to have a “frankenstein” setup, that is LS/Vtec.
Or a Gude/Bullfrog head package for the LS
like cspeed said, doing an ls/vtec right means more than just bolting on a vtec head. Doesn’t matter if your block has zero miles on it, its still not going to be safe to rev as high as you’ll want w/ a vtec head.
If you go ls/vtec, then do it right. raise compression, shot peen the rods, balance the bottom end, use arp rod bolts, and maybe even add a crank girdle.
As for which head to use, i’d use the b16a, cause its the most cost effective. Actually i’d buy an entire b16a swap and just use the head, intake manifold, tranny, and ecu. Then sell the block. This way is the easiest cause it doesn’t require that you go around and round up parts.
and like Ekliptix said, the Gude head package is nice, and makes LOTS of power. But really it requires that you build the bottom end too. (basically no matter what route you take w/ the b18a you’re going to want to beef up the bottom end… cause making power requires reving high… thats something that the b18a doesn’t like in its stock form)
ok so should i replace the whole motor or just do the head swap. and i know that i just cant bolt on the head thats obvious, i just want to know what is the best thing to do and which head is the best
