Wiring Harness question

Is it true that the wiring harness that comes with JDM motors, cannot be used when I do a motor swap. I heard from someone on BSeries.net, that you can’t cause it is designed to work only with a right hand drive car. Is this true? Thanks, LocalePED

thats what i’ve heard too. its just not shaped right. I guess it will plug into everything on the engine bay side, but then the plugs won’t reach over to where the ecu is. But you could splice it into a usdm harness and make a hybrid type thing.

oh, and i’ve been doing some studying up on the non obd to obd1 thing. It seems to me that most all of the sensors are the same for all 90-93 cars. meaning that you could take a 92-93 harness, wire it into your engine bay (you may have to do some or a lot of cutting and splicing, but most everything should line up). Then the obd1 ecu will plug right in. Now this is just preliminary, I need to get some better info. My haynes manual, and the ecu pins that i downloaded from the swap guide are kinda contradictory. If it turns out that i need to do this then I guess i’ll get a helms electrical manuals for a 91 and for a 92 gsr and hopefully i should be able to figure it out from there. Man, this stuff is beginning to give me a headache!

Right on about them lining up! The guy who is making my harness for me, said that I can convert it back to non-obd (by taking out his harness, ecu, and engine) whenever I needed to. From what I gather he is just making me a harness, that has females on the motor side, and males on the ECU side, that convert it…Then again, I don’t know cause I haven’t recieved it yet. I’ll let ya know though.

And the reason I asked about the JDM harness is cause its influencing my decision if I get a USDM or JDM B18C. Late! LocalePED

why is it again that you want to run obd1?

any idea when your harness will be done? I really want to hear how it turns out. How much is the guy charging you?

i’d get a jdm engine, they are cheaper. Unless you want to pass smog, then i’d get a usdm engine.

I’m running OBD-1 a) to pass smog B) to get Hondata’s programmable ECU

so when you’re converting say a '90-91 Teg for a B16. using the existing b18 harness, everything in the engine bay wires up the same, but on the ECU end, you just move the pins around so it corresponds to the correct ECU right?

IE on a PR4 ECU P/S Oil Pressure Switch is pinout B19 but on a PR3(VTEC ECU) the P/S Oil Pressure Switch is pinout C9.
So you just move the pin from B19 to C9 correct?

and 90-91 Integras don’t have a 2nd O2 or a Knock sensor right? so those wires whould have to be added to the correct pinout?

btw what’s a PA sensor?

serialone: its a bit more complex than that. Why or how, i’m not really sure—but i know its not that simple.

it seems there is a lot of special routing going on within the wiring harness. For example:
-for non obd; sensor 1 and 2 might both hook directly to the ecu
however
-for obd1 sensor 1 might hook up to sensor2 and then sensor 2 hooks up to the ecu

see, same basic sensors, and even the same number and color of wires coming from the sensors, but they are hooked to eachother and the ecu much differently. that is how it seems to be in many instances.

but like i said, i’m still working on this.

most people just use a non obd ecu when putting an engine into their 90-91. Its much much easier this way. Everything lines up pretty well. You just have to add a few wires, and i think move some stuff around----but its fairly straightforward.

wiring an obd1 ecu into a non obd car however is something that doesn’t seem to be very easy—in fact i’ve yet to see it done (not that its not possible, its just that i can’t find anyone.)

LocalePED: looks like you’d better go usdm

91IntegGS, sorry I forgot to answer you question earlier. He is charging me $250 for the harness shipped. A small price to pay, if it satisfies everything I hope it will. He emailed me, telling me that hopefully he would finish it by mid next week, and get it shipped out. Later! LocalePED

91IntegGS: I thought that from going to a 90-91 an swapping in a b16a(non-obd) you just run the wires for vtec? an perhaps the o2 and knock sensor?

straight forward no?

localePED: i just got an email from kenji211@gte.net (i’m not sure how he got my email address, or if I emailed him first or what). But he said he’s would sell me a harness that would allow me to run the p61 ecu. All i would need would the the harness, obd1 ecu, dist, and injectors—and then a few slight modifications.

he wanted $245 shipped. Is this the same guy who you are getting yours from? And i’m sure you know, but i would really really like to hear how it works. And if you are able to pass smog, so keep me posted. Hell, if you’re close (i forget if you are), i’d actually like to go and watch the smog ref smog your car!

serialone: yes, putting any vtec engine in the 90-91 is very easy—because most people just use a non obd ecu. This pops right in, and then all you have to do is run wires for the vtec stuff, second o2 sensor, knock sensor… just a few things to deal with.

but that isn’t the case with me or localePED. We need to pass smog here in cali. Which means that with the obd1 engines we are swapping in, we also need to run obd1 ecu’s. Which, do not just plug right in.

91IntegGS: Yep, Kenji is the guy who is making my harness for me. He’s charging me $250, looks like your going to save 5 bucks over me. So he told you, you had to run a diffrent distributor? So, you can’t run the OBD-1 distributor or OBD-1 injectors? …if I’m understnding this correctly? Please let me know. Thanks Mark

i must have typed that bad. i just need the harness, obd1 injectors, obd1 dist, obd1 ecu.

i’m wondering how his harness tackles the o2 sensor problem. Maybe that is one of the “modifications” he was talking about. Becaue in order to pass smog i’ll need to use a 92-93 header, with the heated o2 sensor in the correct place.

I’m guessing that if i buy a 92-93 header, and install it with a 92-93 exhaust extension that it will fit? I sure hope so.

91IntegGS: You know where I think he got your email from?..Today I was reading through some past threads I had participated in on BSeries.net, and you were in the thread also. It was a month and a half ago or so, so I hadn’t been talking to you about this yet, and this one guy on there suggested Kenji for the harness, that or maybe I gave him your email, cause I knew you were interested about the harness as well. Who knows, but I’m sure its one of those two. Anyways, ttyl. LocalePED
