I saw an ad for a YS1 B17 GS-R transmission on Craigslist last week. The guy was selling it for $250. I had my doubts about it being a real B17 short geared tranny. I e-mailed the guy through out the day and asked whatever questions I had about the tranny. He told me there were no grinds or pop outs. He assured me that it was a YS1 GS-R transmission. I really doubted it but, for $250 even if it was a long geared YS1 I guess it wouldn’t be too bad.
I have a GS with a long geared YS1 already. Just that my YS1 sounds like it’s in dier need of a rebuild. My car is my only mode of transport and I didn’t want the down time. So I figured I’d just buy another tranny. The guy told me that it was from his friend’s B17 DA/DB, so he knew it was short geared. I took the risk and bought the “supposed” B17 transmission anyway. He told me if it wasn’t a B17 tranny just call him.
I’ve been busy all week and didn’t have a chance to open up the tranny until about a week after I made the purchase. I opened up the tranny on Friday 05/28/2010 and made the purchase on Saturday 05/22/2010.
I counted the 5th gear’s teeth on both the main and the counter shafts, then did the math for the gear ratio. Wouldn’t you know it, the gear ratio is for a long geared YS1. I contacted the guy right away. Call after call and no answer. I left a couple messages and e-mailed him a few times as well. I kind of expected this would happen. So I’m not all that heated about it.
So I took a chance, oh well, my fault. Still . . . Fuck Scammers. What are you going to do? :shrug:
I went back to the transmission and started inpspecting the rest of it. This is my first transmission I’ve ever opened up, so I’m really new to this. I’m just going off the information I find on H-T and any info I can find on the net. I didn’t take anything apart as of yet other than opening up the casing. I took a look at all the gears and sychros. The sychros’ dog teeth seemed to look ok. They didn’t look rounded. All the bearings looked O.K. and still spun without any problems/noises. I then decided to count the rest of the teeth. I counted the 4th gear ratio and it too was a long geared LS but, from a Y80/S80 B18B LS. I though that was weird. I then counted the rest of the gears’ teeth. It seems that gear ratios from 1-4 are form the Y80/S80 B18B and the 5th is from the long geared YS1 B18A. Now i’m confused. Should this all still work? I just don’t want to close up the casing and install it just to find out it’s F.U.B.A.R.'d.
If anybody can help me out with this, please do.
