Wats the difference between the b20b and b20z? please list specs as detailed as possible plzzzz. Oh yea and of course the hp/torque ratings too…i need to clear this up in my brain asap before i start spending money.
whats up bud. anyway the b20b are the 97-98 crv and the b20z are from the 99-01 crv the b20z as a comp. ratio of 10.2:1 and the b20b has 8.8:1 its because the b20z has flatter top pistons than theb20b. if you want to super/turbo charge go with the b20b if na go with the b20z. good luck
watch piston to valve clearance cause the vtec head has 33mm intake valves and the stock b20 has 31mm so don’t advance intake time more than 4 degrees.
this is all out of honda tuning magazine.
they say you can make 200hp and 150 ft lbs of tq if its done right and has mild work
also to add to that jdm b20b’s are not the same as US b20b’s… w/ jdm b20b’s it depends on the year of the motor…96-98 are the low compression ones, and the 99 and up are the high compression ones, somebody correct me if i’m wrong cuz that’s all i can remember from when i was researching, also there is NO jdm b20z, just b20b.

this link shows some numbers i little different from one of the posters. I don['t have the jdm answers tho.

Ok, cool. BTW: on that site it states that the b20b’s stock redline is 6,200. Now would it be safe it i use the LS ecu and its redline of 6,800?
Yo jimmy wats up, the guy at hondamotorsonline said they only have b20bs, can he get me a b20z? I probably will do crvtec down the raod, but i kinda want a bit more compression than the Bs and a bit more torque to begin with.
as far as i know, the two engines are the exact same, cept for the pistons. I’m guessing it would be ok to rev to 6.8k (or at least 6.7k like the z). The 6200 redline just may indicate where there’s no point of revving higher power wise.
Also, that online moter dealer; are those jdm engines or USDM?

Just buy a b20b block because its harder to find a b20z. You can get the b20z pistons for pretty cheap at ahmotor.com.
I have the b20b block and bought some JE pistons that are 10.5 cr.
The only diff between the two are the comp ratios. Everything else is EXACTLY the same.
It will be fine to rev to the LS redline. I would suggest getting the lower end balanced with the flywheel and crank, crank pulley. This way you will feel confident if you want to raise the redline more.
The JDM b20b engines are the same exact thing as the USDM b20z. Just the IM is not tall.
You can make about 200 with slight mods to the crv engines. I’m looking at getting about 155-165whp from mine and about 140ft/lbs of torque.
What I have and am doing is:
b20b block
je 10.5 pistons
port and polish b18b head,
b18b intake manifold
12 or 13lb lightened oem flywheel
shotpeened oem rods
b18a/b crank pulley
crower 403 cams
crower valve retainers and springs
gsr/itr block girdle
gsr/itr windage tray and oil pickup
existing dc intake and header
exisiting full 2.25 exhaust pipiing
ARP head bolts and rod bolts
Exedy Clutch
adjustable cam gears
CRV throttle body
Here are some numbers from what I have looked into:
Shane Thompsons b20z, dc header, crv tb 139whp, 129ft/lb
Val Berechet’s b20z, crower 404, skunk mai, 159whp, 134 ft/lbs
val’s b20z, crower 404, cam gears, jdm itr header, 166whp, 140ft/lb
Same as above, but with 11.4:1 CR, obd1 ecu, 174whp, 152ft/lbs
How much does the Z pistons go for on ahmotor? And wat would be beneficial of using the b18s flywheel and crank? Faster revs and less energy to get the crank spinning?
Hrmm, seems that i’d have to do alot to the b20 to get it in good order…i still might just go with that b16…
The part that i’m trying to confirm is, do the JDM '97, '98 ('96 too?)b20b’s have the 9.6:1 pistons in 'em too? Are the early JDM b20b’s the same as the USDM b20z’s?
We know the that the USDM b20b’s ('97, '98) have the lower comp. pistons.
So far, with my research, about half the people out there believe one, and the other half think the other.
Are there any sites that list the JDM b20 specs?

Did you mean the crank or the crank pulley? The crank doesn’t matter which one you use b18 or b20. I’m using a b18 flywheel because I’m getting it lightened. You can use the b20 flywheel. ITs pretty much the same exact thing. But the motor might not come with one so watch out for that.
You have to use the b18a/b crank pulley because the b20 one won’t fit.
I’m building my motor little by little and building it like a tank. I know I don’t have to do most of the stuff I’m doing, but why not you know. Not in a rush since my b18a is still perfectly fine.
I think ahmotor qouted me like 200ish for pistons and rings. Probably cheaper. I forget. Email them. Use the existing b20 rods.
Hmm sounds feasible…thx rcn, now onto my decision…
Really, that much power?
So you guys are saying that 200 hp and 150 ft-lbs are doable on an N/A non-vtec B20 with the right mods and tuning? Sign me up!
It’s the engine I’ve been leaning towards for a while, but availability is harder in the Great White North.
Anyway, all you guys with B20’s how streetable is that much power on a daily basis?
here’s a response i got on the hondatech forum…
there are three kinds that come from JDM land:
CRV gets two kinds just like we do the difference is only in the intake but not in the compression
SMX wagon, gets a B20B with a LS intake/headers and other parts
on a dyno my buddys JDM B20B pulled:
138whp and 137lb/ft of torque all stock, running in an 93 integra RS, no mods anywhere…those things are monsters…

Kolin, as far as i know, the b18a/b crank is the same as the b20b/z crank.
You don’t have to do a lot to the b20, you just have to use a lot of exsisting parts from your current car/motor. Like the b20z i got was from an automatic, so i had to put a flywheel there. Am pretty sure i’ve told you all that i had moved over from the b18 to the b20.
As far as redline, i have the same redline as before and have had no problems. I will be having my ecu reprogrammed in the near future.
alrite cool, sounds better than the b16, i’ll hafta get the ecu if i go b16 and it’ll cost only like 150 cheaper than the b20…so might as well for the torque. BTW: Jon, can you give me the # and address to that motorsport shop place that did ur engine?
Oh yea did you have to tell them everything or dey knew wats up and wat to do?
Kolin, the shop that did my swap was importbuilders.com. You can get all their info there although i think they’re renovating their shop right now.
I actually had a list typed up that i gave them when i left my car there. Am pretty sure they kinda know what they need to do but i just wanted to make sure. Although now, since they did mine already, i don’t think you need to tell them anything. I’ll go with you to the shop if ever you decide to do this if you want.
