17 - Vehicle Speed Sensor ?? what to replace

closed

replace the speedometer gauge.

or before replacing check to see if the speedo cable got disconnect behind the cluster or at the transmission.

you probly just have to lube the speedo cable. find where it goes into the transmission. pull the little rubber/plastic cover and pull it up the cable, dont try and take it off

actually click here for the instructions. very detailed

if i leave code 17 vss will it effect the engine or transmission or anything in a negative way other than speedometer and mileage gauge and check engine light. i don’t really want to fix it, low on money right now.

no u should be fine, my code 17 has been on for quite some time now. i ripped to clip off where it connects to the speedometer so i need a whole new cable

well check the obivous first if your low on money. check connection at transmission and behind the gauge cluster. both methods are free.

wait I thought if your car has been throwing a check engine light then it will run in limp mode. With the check engine light on, the car uses more gas and doesn’t really run well.

mine did same thing it came out of the clip on the tranny. but a code 17 wont throw it into limp mode

you car runs usually only in limp mode when the map reads positive manifold pressure.

does the vss code (speedometer not working), have any relation to the gas gauge not working. my car threw the vss code (17) and speedometer stopped working about a week ago and just today i filled up 5 gallons and the need barely moved like 1/10 of the gauge. before i filled up the line was just below the empty mark and after it barely went to the otherside of the empty mark. The sensor in the front of the tranny, if it was defective, it wouldnt throw the vss code would it. because one of the solder joints was coming off and i soldered it on a little better but nothing happened with my speedo

wow just wow. This quote is classic. Make sure you fix it by buying a new OEM cluster directly from acura , but install it only during a city wide police shift change after illegally using and possessing a firearm.

i dont think the VSS has any relation too the gas gauge man , it should only be the speedometer and the gauge that counts the mileage on the car , that doesnt work. and check if its loose, its probrably not broken, all i did was push down and turn it clockwise man to " fix " it.

VSS Code 17 means you have a faulty speedometer gauge. You will have to change the whole cluster.

you don’t have to replace the cluster dude the connections might just be loose or broken. maybe in canada though ?

^LOL “maybe in Canada though?”

for real…

OK here is the deal…
my car is a 92 GSR
the bracket that holds the speedo cable to the transmission broke. Therefore, when ever i “get on it,” my speedo cable pops out. VTEC no longer works when the speedo does not register anything, which sucks.

Sometimes it will throw a code, and go into limp mode.
If I pull over pop it back in, car is back to normal.
I need to replace the bracket that holds the speedo cable in order to fix it…

If you just blindly followed

JAYLO “VSS Code 17 means you have a faulty speedometer gauge. You will have to change the whole cluster.”

man, keep your ignorant comments to yourself. We have already established what a code 17 is. no advice is probably better then bad advice.

you would simply be wasting your time and money.

For now until it gets warmer and money is better, I can fix mine by just popping it back in.

I realize this is not exactly what you are asking about, because i wonder the same thing. If it will have a negative effect on your car to opt not to fix it. Would anyone who knows something about these cars care to enlighten us? Instead of just throwing around .02 cents.

Well, it fixed my problem and I did troubleshoot the transmission cable and the connections.

Maybe it is time for you to look at the service manual and troubleshoot on why you are getting a code 17. What I commented is not my .02 cents, it is directly from the service manual. And voila, code 17 disappeared after I got a new cluster.

It fixed my problem, and if you think that is ignorant, then happy fixing!

sanjoseviets: Maybe the connections were loose/broken, but when I checked mine everything was great. No broken or loose connections, then I followed the troubleshooting in the service manual and it turns out that my cluster was faulty from not getting the right continuity pulse.

By the way, the Vehicle Speed Sensor for our cars is built-in the cluster.

I can understand if that fixed your problems. But, as you said, you checked your cable and connections.
Therefore when giving advice to someone you should have suggested that “if your connections are not faulty” you should look into replacing the whole cluster.

It would be ignorant to lead someone to believe that replacing the whole cluster is the sole action that will solve their problems.

Or better yet, I am sure we would all agree that it would do much more good to share your story, as to how you came about the knowledge that you have.
If you do that, we know you have experience with what you are saying and can give it some credit.
For instance,
“My speedometer stopped working and I was getting a code 17 also. I checked my cable, and my connections at the tranny and behind the cluster, they were good. So after some research on the issue(service manual), I decided to just swap out the whole cluster. That fixed my problems”

I dont think your experience and advice is ignorant…
I just think your method of administering it is. And the fact you throw out a statement without anything to back it up or make it valid. Without that much, to everyone else its just .02 more cents thrown into the pot.

sanjoseviets: Did you find out what you wanted to know?
Did you fix your speedo and code?
Did you find out anything specific about it being harmful to your car to run it with a code?

When you wrote this…
“and check if its loose, its probrably not broken, all i did was push down and turn it clockwise man to " fix " it.”

were you talking about your speedo cable, or your fuel gauge?
