1990 5 speed won't move!

Hey everyone, my son just bought his first car, a 1990 Integra RS with a 5 speed transmission. The car wouldn’t start when he got it, I replaced the battery cables and bought him a new battery and it is running now, BUT…it won’t move. Put it in 1st gear, let the clutch out, nothing. If you rev it in gear the speedometer moves, but the car won’t. It is the same in all gears. I put it in 5th and can go 100 right in my own driveway. The guy he bought it from put a clutch in it in august(I have the reciepts)and he said that he was driving it and just lost all the gears, no noises, no warning, no nothing. So I guess my question is, what broke??? Is it easier to just find another transmission? I am assuming that the differential broke, but I’m not well versed in FWD cars, and totally clueless about imports period. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

somebody had a similar problem a while back. their issue came up while trying to put a new clutch on. i’ll try looking for the thread since i have no idea what it could be called.

i didn’t find it but i found these. basically, it could be the clutch cable?

I think it was DA-Pedro that had that problem. if you look up his username, you might be able to find his thread on the prob. sorry!

If the clutch cable is broken he would not be able to get it into gear as the clutch will be engaged all the time. If he was able to get it into gear (easy w/ the engine off) then the car would run just fine, and drive (although it would be a rough start to get moving), but he wouldn’t be able to disengage the clutch to shift gears).

Since the speedo is registering that you’re moving you know that the clutch is engaged and the transmission’s gears are spinning, for some reason the power just isn’t getting to the ground.

I recommend you take the wheels off and put the car up on jackstands, then try the same tests.

First check to see if any portion of either axle is rotating when you’re in gear and “driving”. If a cv joint is broken part of an axle could be spinning, and since the car has an open diff the other axle won’t even try to move.

If the entirety of both axles are not moving while “driving” then your problem is going to be inside the transmission. At that point I’m not really sure what the problem could be, but unless you know a decent amount about transmissions or have a good transmission hookup you’ll probably just be looking for a replacement.

I agree, check the axles.

The clutch cable is fine, I verified that the clutch fork is pivoting correctly and it is engaging the clutch correctly. I’ll have to jack it up and check the axles. If it is the transmission, what others will fit it?? Thanks.

90-91 integra transmission (a1/s1/y1/j1)will bolt up w/o any modifications

92-93 integra transmission (ys1) will bolt up just fine but will require the clutch disk made for the larger diameter shaft of the 92-93 transmission.

94+ Integra transmissions use a hydraulic clutch setup and will not work w/o modification and/or a conversion kit.

it is definately the axles I have had this before
the motor and tranny are fine but the axles are broken at the cv joints or the inner joint. only one axle has to be broken

:werd: check axles

The transmission is def. shot, it looks like a bearing seized and it actually pushed the CV axle out of the transmission. We’re going to sell the car, hopefully to someone who wants to fix it or use it for parts. I’d hate to scrap it, it seems to run nice and is in pretty good shape.

why not just get another transmission for it? it won’t cost much at all used. its not hard installing a tranny either.

thats a little dissapointing. it’ll only take a weekend. and at the most $400.

The only transmission I could find locally was $400, I’d need to get another CV axle because the end is messed up on the one that got pushed out of the transmission, so there’s at least another $150 or so, and the whole things reeks of clutch, so possible replacement of that as well, plus it needs tires and brakes and blah blah blah for PA inspection, so I’m looking at close to $1000 for parts. Not to mention it’s December and therefore pretty cold here in PA, too cold to be laying in the driveway putting a transmission in a 18 year old car. The cheapest quote I got from a garage to install just the trans. was $300.

well your “son” shouldnt of bought a car with all these problems.

well, axles can be had for less than $100, i’ve seen LS trannies let go for around $75 if you take your time and look around. clutch kits on ebay goes for around $100. and labor? well use this as a project for you and your son, shouldn’t take more than a weekend to finish. whatever you decide to do is up to you, good luck.

When I blew my axle from doing a ricey burn out my car would not move. What I did was i shut the car off, put it in first and let out the clutch and did not stall.

you sound like a real piece of shit by saying that.

well i think it could be done for less then what your saying. i dont think your looking hard enough…either way, good luck. and my final advice is to stick it out and get the thing running good, it’ll be worth it.

You’re right he “shouldn’t” have bought it…but he “did”…he’s a dopey “kid” that doesn’t “listen” to his “father”

that can happen? a bearing seizing and pushing the CV axle out? i’m not tranny expert, but is there like a possiblity the jackass that installed the tranny didn’t shove the sucker in til the locking ring “clicked” in? i’ve retarded friends that kept having that problem. they didn’t know that it had to click in, or didnt’ know that a ring should be on the end of the axle going into the half shaft and tranny. so whenever they tried to launch or burnout, they’d usually end up towing the car home til i came over and helped them out.

but if it was ACTUALLY verified that this happened and that bearing seized… sorry to hear that. if u just jacked it up and looked at it… give the dang thing a try. shoot, the money has been spent, the car is there, take off the axle lock nut, remove the ball joints (2 simple 17 mm castle nuts), then nut and bolt on the fork for the suspension. move the suspension over, slide the rotor n stuff out of the way, (hammering the axle out of the rotor first if it doesn’t just slide off, then pull of the dam axle out by the inner end, not by the joint. if it slides right out. look for the ring. not there, then thats obviously a problem. if the ring is there, shove that sucker back in holding it by properly by the inner end and by the shaft, and make sure it goes it leveled and centered just right so that it clicks in. if u hear it click, then its obviously in there. sometimes its not a loud click so keep ur ears open. then reassemble. torque things down, put wheel on, don’t torque it yet tho, almost can’t since its obviously still raised. get in the car and give it a go as long as both front tires are off the ground. start the car, put it in 1st and let off the clutch and if the wheels spin, then u just saved urself some money and well some frustration. even tho doing all that would have been frustrating enough. but atleast ur son would know how to change an axle for his car for future reference, assuming he helped out.

and well… if this bearin is confirmed to be jacked up. then i just wasted my time writin this, but i don’t care. i’m half asleep and dont have to go to work all that early tomorrow.

good luck on the sale, or on the car getting to operatiing conditions. either way, good luck. and u should give ur son that “i told u so” speech, he’ll enjoy it.
