I have a stock 91 LS. Yesterday I had issues with the car cutting off on me four times. I have aftermarket Ebay 4-2-1 headers installed 10/09, with about 14k miles it’s almost pancaked in (lower pipe). I suspect that my headers are either cracked or manifold gasket is bad.
I have a A/F ratio gauge installed, and notice that my a/f is going crazy for the past week (somehow fresh oxygen getting in and throwing off weird a/f numbers). I also have a vacuum gauge hooked up before the fuel regulator. When I first installed it (month ago), I have readings of idle @ 20-21 and decel @ 23-25. About two weeks ago before this cutoff problem, my vac gauge idles @ 15 and decel @ 18…
Can someone tell me if this is related to the exhaust manifold leak? The last four times I was able to start up in a couple mins, tonight it just cranked but never turned over. Called for a tow and thirty minutes later when he arrives, it starts up. I wasn’t taking any chances so I had him tow it to my shop of choice. I saw a puddle of what seems to be steering fluid on the ground, checked engine oil level and it was fine.
The times that the car cuts off has different situations and variables, it seems to happen when at idle and giving gas or at rolling 2nd and in to third it cuts out. Doesn’t happen consistantly, maybe someone has had this problem? When it cuts off, CEL goes on, but restart and it doesn’t show CEL. Weird…
Narrow down my possibilities to:
Exhaust Manifold Leak (Shouldn’t be related, but replacing and raising vehicle so this doesn’t occur again)
Main Fuel Relay (Causing vehicle to shut down at random times, but still allows to restart after certain time)
No one has any advice?
Well, I did more research… I’ve already replaced spark plugs / wires, ignition coil, cap and rotor all back in Oct '09 with about 13k miles on them. I’ve been talking with my Honda technician and garage technician. I’ve ruled out that exhaust manifold making my car cutoff during operating temp and various different times. Both technician told me to check out the distributor and ignition coil.
Certain things I’m overlooking is the igniter and ignition control module. I may have to purchase the igniter first and see if that corrects my issue.
Still no one has any tips or advice on this matter?
just take off ur distrubutor cap and look at the connections see if there coroded in any way, also check the terminalls on the cover were the spark plug wires connect they can get worn and not get a good enough connection, happend to me it was and $18 dollor fix.

When the car shuts off on idle or evening at a cruising speed, that is your Ignitor going bad. Yes, replace it.
Had a brand new OEM igniter installed and no problems since…
