So a local gentleman has what he claims to be a Japan edition 1991 GS-R. As far as I know, the GS-R wasn’t released until 1992. He claims it has the B17 GS-R engine and the title even claims GS-R. Any possibility this is a legitimate GS-R or is he full of

I figured so. I guess he took a stock LS or GS and swapped in a GS-R motor and doctored up a title somehow.

If the vin does not have “DB2” in it, then it is not a GSR. Could be a 92 that was built in 91 and he is going by the build date on the B pillar vin sticker.
That’s immediately what I thought too. He was looking at the build date.
Get the VIN, that will tell you what you need to know. Like the others mentioned, the GSR didn’t start until 92 and they were not available in japan. B17a’s never came in JDM cars and in japan the sporty model was not called a GSR and instead it was called an XSi (which had a b16a).
