Quick question for you here…YES I’ve searched with no results.
I’ve got a 15inx6in rim and I want to mount a 205/50/r15 tire on there…Question is will this work?
The previous tire I had on there was a 195/50/r15 and the sidewall was protruding a little BIT (IE if I layed the rim flat on the ground the rim wouldn’t touch the ground, the tire would).
Do you think this is to wide of tire to mount on a 6in rim? Reason I’m asking is I’ve got very good deal on a new set of Dunlop Sport A2’s but can only get them in that size…
while we’re on this, would you recommend putting 195’s or 205’s on a 6" wheel for performance purposes? not drag, just typical ‘spirited driving.’
i ask because i’m in the middle of a suspension overhaul and i’m getting ready to buy new tires also. i just dont know what size or kind of tire would be best. i have 14" civic hx wheels now with 195/60/14.
I used the tires that are on right now for auto-x and they held up just fine. Im in the process of getting some 15x6.5 or 7 cause Im gonna put some 225’s on. I dunno what the size would be for a 14’ rim but I know my fat fives are 15x6 and they work fine.
I always think the wider the better. So 205>195 no matter what the width is al long as the rim is relatively close to the same size. Handling is better along with traction with a wider tire.
it’s not ideal to put 205’s on a 6" wheel, or 225’s on a 6" wheel, but it’s certainly possible. when you up the tire section width but keep it on the same size rim, contact patch area increases are minimal–it’s the shape that changes, mostly. the relative benefit of a wider tire on a skinny wheel is sometimes outweighed by the increased weight of the tire as well as the increased sloppiness of the sidewalls so it’s not always better to be wider.
however, 6" wheels and a 205/50/15 are a very common combination, and i think that it’s a reasonable setup. i’d rather step it up to a 15x7 (there are enough cheap 15x7’s out there) for use with a 205 or 225 width, though.
there are a few racers on 225/45/15 r-comps and 6" wheels–however, keep in mind that they are class limited in the wheels that they are allowed to run and given the chance to go wider, they would in a heartbeat.
i have a related question: Lets say you buy a competition radial in 205/50-15 size. And you have Si wheels on the car. They are like 5 inches wide i believe. What would the advantages/disadvantages to getting a wider wheel such as 15x7 Volk racing? If you keep the same exact tires on there, what happens?
The only real disadvantage to the wider wheel would be higher chance of damaging them on curbs.
The advantage would be increased steering response and probably corner entry.
And one that could go either way is that you would likely notice the ride wouldn’t be as soft with the wider wheels (depends on what you like).
on circuit the sidewall flexes too much and the tyre bobs and rolls way too much. steering response is wooly, with less response/feel than there should be. the Toyo T1-R is also a soft walled tyre which doesn’t help.
next time I’m sticking to 195/55 or going 195/50
205/50 would be good on a 15x7 wheel. IMO, a 205/50 on a 15x6 wheel won’t feel that good at all, although it will fit on. the profile isn’t going to be ideal.
+1 to what boma said im in the exact position hes in sidewall flexes too much and steering response is wobly and im getting 195/50 next time 15x6.5 inch rim
I have some 205/50’s on a civic Si wheel. according to Wheel weights.net those wheels are cast and 15x6 and weigh 18 lbs!
i dont like how the tire kinda rolls over on the sidewall. it looks like the tire is obviously too wide for the wheel. i want to change to the Kosei K1 Racing wheel with the same 205/50 tires.
the K1’s are 15x7, cast, and weigh 13.5 lbs. im wondering what performance and appearance differences i will notice?
Well, other than the handling issues stated above, the 13.5pd wheels are unsprung weight. Anything you can do to lighten unsprung weight helps; cause it will allow your rotating mass to move easier.
