wats up, i was wondering if there is anyone that can give me a clear explination and solution to my problem. When i shift from second to third and from fourth to third i hear a grind right before it gets in gear. its becoming very annoying, i read threads that say change the oil and others to change the clutch or transmission i am lost in this subject. thanks
First, change the oil, which would obviously be the most cheapest thing to try. Don’t change the clutch. Just do the most inexpensive stuff first. Then if that doesn’t do the trick, you’ll need the transmission taken apart and inspected for damages to the 3rd gear related parts, etc.
The thing about changing transmissions would be cheap since the price of a used tranny is roughly $500. But you would still have to have it removed and replaced, which costs $$$$$$$$$. It would be the same or less cost to have the tranny removed, fixed, and then replaced; then you would know for sure that you have a good tranny instead of taking a shot in the dark with a used unit.
I hope this helps!
yea your probably right, i just got of the phone with a mechanic he agreed to help me out with my car i know the guy so he’l probably just make me help him figure it out and he wont charge me. ill keep update when i find out the problem. thanks bro
No problem!
my accord grinds going into third when the trans fluid is low (leaks from axle seals) if you top it off and it still grinds, probably the synchro. thats whats wrong with my integra. its getting to the point that double clutching doesn’t help much. each gear is about $350, one for the mainshaft and one for the countershaft, depending on how bad it is when you get in there
Yeah, it’s a pretty common thing. Try searching a little, there’s a lot of threads here about it. Try either Honda MTF or GM Syncromesh oils. I use the GM stuff and it works great. The other trick you can try is burnishing the syncro. Search for it, most people have success with it. I went from grinding the 2-3 shift at anything over 4k rpm to slamming it in at any speed with no problem (not that i do that very often, mine’s a Winter beater, not a race car. lol).
Overall, i say search and read up before doing anything.
pennzoil makes synchromesh too
i heard about that burnishing the sychros but did not get it. wat exactly do you do?
my problem is always the 2nd gear grind, but try some syncromesh and dont drive hard until after a week after its put in and see if it helps the grind
alright my mechanic is saying that its time for a new clutch also. Now i dont have a lot of cash my mechanic is installing it for free. I am looking at these kits on ebay but im not sure i would like to get a stage 1 clutch but should i also get the fly wheel with it? Any one have any good advice?
i have this clutch and its good

i also have the Fidanza 7.5 pound flywheel
Is the clutch slipping? If it’s hard to get in gear, try adjusting the cable first.
I have the same problem…its just JUST starting to grind at high rpm into 3rd…but i found a rebuild kit for a our trannys last night on ebay…its 182 bucks american …comes with all new seals, bearings and synchro’s…i am going to have my tranny rebuilt, with a posi, and at the same time going to buy a light weight flywheel and stage 2 clutch.
Prolly end up being 500 bucks but well worth it and no more headaches after that. Oh and its under TRANSAXLE rebuild kit not transmission. I wish i would have known that a lil earlier …i needed a rebuild kit last yr …but couldnt find one online looking for transmission rebuild kit
Usually 2-3 gear grinds are due to the shift fork getting out of whack, least it was on my three transmissons. Burnishing works to a point, but eventually you will need to replace the synchro ring and the inner surface is worn out causing bad alignment to the other gear synchro.
As to rebuilding a tranny - it actually isn’t too hard, if you take your time. Find a good used tranny, and take it apart WITH THE PROPER FACTORY MANUAL. Only real specialized tools you will need are a good bearing puller and snap ring pliers.
Forget buying a used tranny to put in place of your existing one. All cable trannies are now a minimum of 13 years old. Just take the time to rebuild it, or contact gearspeed.com about getting one.
DO NO USE THE EBAY KIT. The tolerances suck on that crap.
HOw would the tolerances be any different …unless the tranny is worn out…otherwise they shouldnt even work together. Honda tranny’s are pretty low tolerance…so…i dunno. To tell you teh truth, that rebuild kit is the ONLY rebuild kit ive ever seen thats not 1200 dollars.
Question: i been reading about the synchromesh from GM…on some of the other threads…Will this help prevent grinding cause i get a 3rd gear mini-grind only once in a while…like say once ever 10 times i shift over 5500…should i swap out the old fluid and put this stuff in? Also i live in Canada and we get -30 degree celcius temperatures…is it safe to swap still?
I’m in AK, and while my teg doesn’t see -30C regularly (it gets close sometimes, about -5F or -20C), i’ve had no problems with the GM fluid in my trans.
As for the OP, unless you’re getting some serious grinds and/or other symptoms of a failing clutch, i’d bet money that your clutch is fine for now.
Alright guys i have another lil dilema, i need help im planning on rebuilding my motor in mid january along with the grinding gears my engine burns oil and is lacking the power i want. i want to invest in swapping the trans. i would like to get a b16 trans. does any one know if it just bolts on or if it need work and also do the stage 1 clutch and flywheel for a stock b18 tans fit a b16. please help!!! i need detailed info thanks
Moonscryer, what are your experiences with the ebay kit? Have you personally bought/worked with it? I was looking at the one off of ebay as well and was curious.
