4.78 final drive in a ls ys1?

I have been looking for a minute to buy a ys1 lsd trans, or just a ys1 trans and i cant find one anywhere that i can buy one. So my question is can i buy a 4.78 or a 4.9 final drive for an itr, and put it in my YS1 ls trans? Can it be done with minimal customization, and how much would it cost to be put in? I dont know a damn thing when it comes to trans. so any input would help thanks

Be careful, YS1 trannys come in ‘short geared’ and ‘long geared’ versions.

Also, when you change the final drive, the mainshaft has to be matched to the final drive you are using. Or is it the countershaft, oh well, one or the other.

Do yourself a favor and contact a vendor named GEARSPEED over at HondaTech. They know their shit and can steer you in the right direction. They can give you advice on modifying your transmission with what parts to use, and can give you great prices on their parts.

Here’s an example, I needed differential bearings, and the dealer wanted like $38 each or something, Gearspeed had the exact same bearings for $40 shipped for both. Good luck.

ooops.

as long as you have the OE f.d. kit, it will fit your YS1 with no mods. i’m currently putting an OE 4.785 f.d. kit into my YS1 vtec tranny and hydro 5th gear. no mods needed. too bad your in Jersey, i’m pulling out my spare vtec YS1 this weekend.

Some place to look for parts

so it does fit on the YS1 with the f.d. kit ok how about LSD, i have been doing research and they say i have to you a type-r LSD OEM or aftermarket… or could i use any b-series LSD

yeah it should fit, I am going to use the type R final drive since its an oem piece and my ls is the big splined tranny (YS1)

ok this is the situation… i have a YS1 tranny… gears are no good… 1-4th grind because im friend was an animal with his GS-r, so i bought the case and like that i could take my time and not have to worry about getting the parts all at once and still drive my car… for the replacement of the gear i have a full set of gear of a 2000 with mainshaft and countershaft. then if i get the complete f.d. kit of a type-r wat clutch would it need to match the spindle???

92+ b-series clutch kit

Ok, so whats the benefit of this mod? Never heard much about it. More room before toppin’ out?

Actually, it’s the opposite.

The 4.78 final drive makes the gears shorter.
