Didnt there use to be an audio section to this site? Oh well, anyway, I am thinking about buying some 6x9’s for my teg, and i was wondering how much work goes into installing them. I know 6 1/2 will just pop right in, but how hard is it to install 6x9’s? What are the tools needed, how long does it take, yada yada yada… Thanks for your imput
Do you have a sedan or a hatch? I think the sedans have 6x9’s in the rear stock, don’t they?
And are you planning on replacing all 4 speakers with 6x9’s or just the rears?
I have a hatch. I was gonna do 6x9’s in back and 6 1/2 up front, but if its not much of a hastle, i may do 6x9’s up front too…
I have done this in my 90 hatch already. Sounds better than 6.5’s. More mid range and bass! You have to remove the hatch panels completely. It’s a pain in the butt! Those panels are one big piece on each side and one in the very rear. The kicker is that the side panels are one piece all the way up to the door frame. You also end up having to re-insert clips into the rear window seal. That’s a pain in the butt too if you want it to look un-molested. The only reason I did is because I had the 6x9’s already and the old 6.5’s were blown and I had a few hours to kill. If you are thinking of buying 6x9’s just for this conversion…it’s really not worth the effort. If you are hellbent on doing it anyway I will be happy to tell you in detail what I did.
I’ve got some 6x9’s laying around, if you have the time, could you please post details?
…did they end up with a baffle and facing up? or are they angled? May as well try out some rear fill.
off topic- round speakers are preferred for superior sound quality. 6x9’s usually seem to have more bass cuz the cone is just larger, but in fact, higher quality 6.5’s can have even more bass as well. then of course separates improve quality even more.
anyways, its probably not discernable to most but as always, the more you know…

hey that was a pretty informative post, good stuff XDEp.
Okay Redteg here it goes.
- Take out hatch cover.
- Remove speaker covers.
- Remove rear trim panel(panel that covers both tailights not individual taillight access panels)
- Remove side both side trim panels from hatch. This is a one piece unit on each side that goes all the way up to th doors.
- You may be able to loosen these pieces well enough without completly removing them. That would be easier than trying to re-insert the clip back under the rear window seal.
- Remove speaker pods and old speakers. You’ll need a socket to get the pods out. I forget what size.
- Flip speaker pods upside down and line up new speakers to fit. They will have to go in diagonally. You’ll see what I mean. 9. Mark the spots where you will drill new mounting holes. These holes will be in the frame of the pod and nowhere near the old holes. You will need the extra long type of speaker mounting screws. I believe I only used 2 screws with either locking washer or locking nut.
- Re-install pods with speakers already mounted. Re-connect wire and rock on!
The reason you may have to remove the side panels completely is to get at the bolts holding the speaker pods to the body.
That is as much as I can remember since it has been about a year since I did this “conversion”.

Cool, thanks man, I appreciate that, wanted to see how it’d be pulled off.
Even though I know most 6x9’s dont compare to a decent pair of splits (or coaxials for that matter; actually Rockford Fosgate once made a line of ‘whizzers’ as a developmental thing to see how good they could get them, but i digress) in terms of tonal quality, I need some rear fill for the moment to tie in my front splits with my sub, and the splits from my previous car are so oversize that they wouldn’t drop in the back without a bit of work.
6x9’s are for sedans, end of story; where you want to install a pair of speakers with a larger cone area but have no room due to the rear seat/window. Also, from what I’ve seen, 6x9’s often have a greater efficiency. What pains me most is the rear hatch tray cut for a pair of 6x9’s in our cars, but hey, each to their own.
My friend had his 6x9’s like that AND 2 boxed 10’s and I disowned him.
Oh, and had 4" dualcones in the front…
In our 2 doors they shouldn’t create too much bass, as it seems they’ll be more or less free-air.

hey u got ne pics of this i would like to see how it came out Thanks
Hey Acura90…no pics sorry. Nice and clean final product. Since the speakers fit in the factory pod you can put the stock speaker covers right back over the top. Sleeper speaker set up.
You could plant the 6x9 on top of the rear flap in your trunk. Just unhook the stock rear speakers and hook them up. You will have to cut a 6x9 shape on that flap. That’s what I did and they sound great…
cr-vtec…is your teg a 4 door?
Ye but if its a hatch you’d end up with 4 speaker grilles in the back
…not to mention it looking a tad cheap

The previous owner of my AV did that - it looked ghetto x 99. Anyone can hack a car up, but it takes a little skill, planning, and patience to do it right.

No, only the GS’s had 6x9. It may have even been an option. I have a 91LS 4-door with 6.5’s.
kinda off-topic, is it easy to remove all the rear panels? and does it look bad?? i am thinnking of converting the car to 2-seater with what is going to be a flat floor throughout, made of aluminum sheets and i wanted to end the “palmy blue” part of the interior at the doors. are the shock towers pretty high…i hate messing around with this kind of stuff without knowing how it will wind up halfway thru the process. thanks
Hey Texn,
The panels are one piece. They start in the back just on either side of the tailights and go all the way to the door. Shock towers fill panel about half the way up. You would have to decide on a good place to cut the panel. I don’t think it would look very good if you tried to cut the panels. If you don’t like the palmy blue see if you coud find a different color panel to replace it with. Just my .02
Mein Tegra: I do do have a hatch. It does look kinda ghetto, but it works and saves time. My windows are also tinted so it’s pretty hard to peep inside
Sorry for bringing this topic up again, but my rear stock speakers just craped out on my yesterday. I took off the speaker covers, and found that the jumper (cone surround) had turned into dust… lol. Great quality stock speakers
Anywho, i decided that its time to replace em now
I really want to get a good pair of 6x9’s in there, but i dont wanna drill, or rip apart the hatch to squeeze em in. cr-vtec - you said that you just drilled into you hatch cover? how does that look/sound? I dont have any tint, so if it looks too rush rush, and easy to steal, i think ill settle for a good pair of 6’1/2", and just pop em into the old speaker slots. Also, i was going to go pioneer, but i just heard some koss the other day and they sounded great… Anyone use Koss speakers?
Thanks
