90/91 & 92/93 Transmission hybrid possibilities?

Hey everyone!

I have a question for you transmission guys. I initially swapped a 92/93 transmission into my integra during my manual conversion. However, the linkage mounting ear has cracked and cannot be repaired, thus making the casing useless. I just bought a 90/91 transmission. I know the differences between the input spline and teeth count. My question is:

Can I swap all internals from my 92 into my new 91 casing? Also, are all the gears interchangeable? It’s not a GSR transmission, so I believe they are all the same gears. I might be interested in replacing my reverse and synchro as it was popping out of gear the other day.

Any insight guys? I had just bought and installed a brand new clutch and I really don’t want to buy the 91 era clutch cause they are uncommon and expensive. Lol.

Thanks!!

Why not just weld the cracked ear? It’s just for the stabliser bar.

I don’t remember off hand if you can swap internals, but generally the bearings have to be the same size to swap cases around. Look up the part #'s and see if the diff and main and countershaft bearings are the same. If they are you can swap em.

We had already welded it when it was off the car, it was so far gone (as in the ear was sheared off) and we did everything we could, but to no surprise it cracked again. The motion from the shifting lever area in junction with the stabilizer ear receiving pressure from shifting caused it to crack again. That area is impossible to keep clean while welding unless you rip the whole transmission apart and dry everything off. We just couldn’t get good enough penetration to save it.

I ended up buying a different trans.

For the record (and I’m sure it’s been stated before), from the mouth of Exedy, the ONLY difference between 90/91 and 92/93 clutch kits from them is the actual clutch disc, which we all know is from shaft size and tooth count. The pressure plate, pilot and release bearings are all the same part numbers. So for anyone curious of this next time that doesn’t want to swap internals, there is your answer.

Thanks for the input!

Axe: The 90-91 Transmissions are internally different from the 92-93 Transmission. The internal shifting “finger” or ‘fork’ is different, I believe the internal gear shaft size for the gears are different. The 90-91 transmission has a single fork shift finger that aligns the gears per shaft during shifting. The 92-93 has a 3 finger fork aligner that does the job. I don’t know the true reason for that design difference, but a transmission mechanic said it is to create better gear shifting stability during shifting since you have alot of rotation and minor vibration from the movements. I think this is the reason why the 92+ transmission have a smoother feel and seem to be more durable than the 90-91. I know there is a smoother shift in the 92-93 transmissions as my first integra was a 91 which lasted to 224k miles (til a bad accident) That transmission gave me little problems til about 200k when 3rd started to slip and grind then later on would not lock into 3rd gear.

My 92’ and 93 Integra’s ran great, except twice I had an oil leak from the axle seal which fired two transmissions.

I currently have a 1990 Integra sedan with a B17a on a 92 GS long geared 5 speed. That current transmission just suffered a oil leak that seized up the synchros and barings. I just recently picked up a 92 GSR YS1 transmission that I will be doing a custom 1-2-3 GSR short gears (city gears) with 4-5 YS1 GS long gears (highways driving) This will leave me with an extra good condition 92-93 transmission case that I will be more than willing to sell to you versus sending to a metal recycle yard. If you are serious true about purchasing these left over transmission case and internals I will gladly get you clear photos along with shipping price. I will have to mail the “whole” transmission in peice to save on shipping cost. The total package would be 92-93 complete bell housing, shifter clutch fork, extra gear shafts, and gears (1-2-3 long GS gears, 4-5 short GSR gears).
