I got into my car the other day and when i turned the key, nothing happened. I mean no dash lights, no radio, no clicking sounds, nothing. while i was bitching about it [key was still ON] everything just came alive like someone flipped a switch, and the car started fine when i cranked it.
the next day i got in the car and the same thing happened, so i decided to see if it was the battery i hit my hazard switch and it made an awful buzzing sound. well it came alive on its own again, but it acted like it didnt wanna crank, i rolled it and popped the clutch and it started and ran fine.
ffwd a couple days, i have replaced the ignition switch [electrical part], both battery terminals, new ground cables [batt>frame>trans, block>rad support] and i have double and tripled checked both fuse boxes. the car will not respond with the key in the ON position. hazards work fine now, so do headlights, dome lights all work. basically any circuit not associated with the ignition switch works fine so i know the battery is okay.
but i turn the key to ON and i have no clicking from any relays, no dash lights, just unresponsive silence. and it quit doing its little coming alive trick, it just sits there and stays unresponsive now.
ive searched and searched, and havent come up with anything. and slaved over this car for 3 days, im at a loss. any ideas guys?
(my apologies ahead of time, before anyone tells me to search harder, if i missed something searching, tell me where its at and ill check it out.)
With the key in the on position, you need to test for battery voltage at the ignition switch. I don’t think it’s seeing voltage.
You replaced with a new switch, correct?
yes brand new ignition switch, but not key cylinder.
started chasing wires with a test light today, with the key on i have voltage on the ACC wire (White/Red) and the 12V battery wire, but from what i could find there is no voltage going out to the IGN wire (Black/Yellow). also no voltage at the Start signal wire (Black/White) when i turn it to start. im trying to type this from memory so i dont remember all the colors or uses. but what i dont get is, i seem to have power coming in, but no power going out.
and for some odd reason now, just the radio comes on when in ACC or ON, but still nothing else…?
could it be a short somewhere? i couldnt find any broken wires or bad connections.
well i figured it out. the ignition switch was the problem at first, my own stupidity was the next problem.
when i started trying to fix this issue, the parts stores were closed, so while waiting for morning so i could go get an ignition switch, i tried all the other options. which included taking apart my underhood fusebox to repair a bad screw on the battery wire. well when i reassembled the little jigsaw puzzle of metal pieces, i left one out. i saw it on the workbench this morning, took the fusebox back out, disassembled it, reassembled it including that piece, put it back in, and taa-daaaa. everythings good to go.
thanks for trying to help out welfare.
Was it one of the bridges? A little flat piece of copper?
yeah, the one that links the 50 IGN fuse to the wiring harness connector lol. i feel like an idiot, but im glad i got it figured out.
I’ve had this problem with my first teg, It only happened for a week or so then everything went back to normal, turns out it was loose conections in my harness.
