Hey guys been a while since I posted on here but I have a 91 Integra with the JDM B16A swap and Y1 transmission. I am having a hard time getting it into 1st gear at a dead stop. If I come slow down and try and put it in, it goes right in. But I come to a dead stop and she doesn’t want to go in 1st or goes in hard. Another thing i notice is that when i am completely stopped and try to go in 1st… the car will almost creep forward just a hair bit? But I have replaced the trans fluid, shift linkage and adjusted the clutch and it still does it. My mechanic buddy seems to think the clutch is dragging. What do you guys think??
and this only happens in first? if you try and start in other gears, it goes in fine and doesn’t creep?
Yea just in 1st gear it does this. Every other gear it goes in smooth. But 1st gear it just feels like resistance. And creeps forward a cunt hair. My buddy said it’s the clutch dragging it seems like. But he’s not around to actually look in person.
does it go into first easily with engine off? a dragging clutch would give you trouble in all gears. if it’s only first, it’s more than likely something in the syncronizer assy. maybe a detent spring on the sleeve or something
Yea it goes into first easily when the car is off. Is there an actual syncronizer for 1st gear?
yes. 1-2 will both be syncronized using the same fork and syncro sleeve. first gear will have it’s own blocking ring tho of course. your problem will probably be in the sleeve i suspect. or maybe damaged teeth on the blocking ring. or maybe just a plain ol worn blocking ring. it’s gonna be something in the syncro assy tho. you can try a thicker fluid maybe. that might help. redline shock proof helps for masking issues sometimes
Welfare do you suspect it could be a problem with my clutch at all?? I ordered some GM syncromesh friction modified from the dealer today and will try that as well.
a clutch issue should be prevailant in all gears really. i personally like the redline shock proof over the gm stuff. but try it out. see if it helps
Thanks Welfare for your input. I should get it in this week sometime. Just waiting on the dealer to get it here. But I will report back and let you know how it goes.
UPDATE: I went to go and drain my trans fluid out Thursday… it came out looking like jelly,:uhoh: then I put some 10w30 motor oil in and drove it around to get it hot and get all the “jelly” out of my trans. Then I came home and drained that out. Then I took and put my GM syncromesh friction modified in, and adjusted the clutch… then took it for a drive and now it doesnt seem to be as hard to get in 1st gear. It doesnt have nearly as much resistance to get in 1st now as it did before. Its not perfect but has improved. It was wierd though that I had a jelly like fluid in my trans.
hmmm not milky? usually water intrusion is about all you get for contamination. that and incorrect fluid. which who knows what the po may have used. try another drain and fill in a week. see how it looks. definitely wanna monitor that tho
No it didnt look milky at all… just thick like hair gel or grape jelly, something like that. It was strange.
UPDATE: Well I installed a new Exedy Stage 1 clutch and exedy lightweight flywheel. And now it shifts into 1st gear with no problems. Good luck to anyone who has these problems in the future.
:read:
hmm. what did the clutch and flywheel look like? any bent fingers?
good question update on anything you found amiss ??
Hey guys weirdly enough… none of the clutch components looked that bad. The disc still had some material left on it like it wasn’t wore down that bad. The pressure plate didn’t look bad, just the usual wear on the fingers from where the throw out bearing rides on it. The flywheel didn’t look bad… just the usual wear with nothing burnt or anything. Throw out bearing turned good. But one thing I did notice, was that the splines on the mainshaft (where the clutch disc slides on) looked like they were dry. So I’m wondering if maybe the disc wasn’t sliding as easily as it was supposed to?? So I greased the splines with high temp grease before I put everything back together.
Thanks for the update.
No problem guys. Hopefully this thread will help my fellow DA Integra lovers.
Just a question… Any idea why did the gear fluid turned to jelly also, why did you use 10w30 motor oil instead of the correct gear oil?
i believe 10w30 is the correct viscosity. however, does not have the friction modifiers included as honda mtf does
