Ok I just got a 91 gs model and the little red battery light is on when you drive. If you rev past 5 grand it goesm out but comes back on below 5 grand. I got a new battery and still no help. The battery is dead after 3 hours of sitting and the cooling fan will come on and go off when the key is off and i am not in the car. Is the alt bad or is it a short??? Please help I really like this car but It is not working out right now!!!
sounds like its the alternator.
take the car to an autoparts store. they have a tester. it will check the voltage. voltage on the battery with the car off should be about 12volts. when the car is running it should be about 14.4volts. if you have a multimeter at home you can check it yourself. if the car is on and its not only at 12 or so volts, it means the alternators dead.
its probably the alternator. reving it past 5k just makes the alternator spin faster, which makes it put out a little more power, thus turning the light off.

yeah, could be a bad spot on the armature which above 5k it wouldn’t make as much of a difference then.
