I know there are tons of car wont start threads so sorry if this is the same as others please this seemed like a different scenario.
I was driving on the freeway today and my car stalls out of know where, and started backfiring. So I coasted to the shoulder and tried to start it again and all it did was backfire. I get the car to the gas station thinking maybe I’m low on gas so I add gas and it is still backfiring… I took off the distributor cap and noticed the rotor, Allen screw broke off so i went and bought a new rotor put it back on and the car trys to start but wont turn over any ideas bad distributor?
Car worked fine except for a bouncy idle on occasion until today
Items already replaced
Main Fuel Relay,
O2 Sensor,
New PCV Valve
New Battery And Wires
Plugs and Wired are about 6 Months Old ( NGK )
New Fuel Filter
Idle Air Control Valve
If the screw on the original rotor literally broke or rattled loose, and it was bouncing around inside the housing it could have damaged the gearing inside the distributor. Also, the coil may now be bad.
Thats what i thought i didn’t wanna buy a new one if their might also be another problem anything i should look for when changing the distributor any special way of doing it?
Prior to this i have had an idle that would sometimes stall my car, at random stops and make my idle go from near stall or stall then back up to around 1k
ive already replaced these parts

i’ve had the same problem on my teg just like two months ago. change the whole distributor. also, check the plugs and wires if it went bad or not. i would also check how the fuel is running (lean, rich). i was running wayyy to rich and basically it caused alot of dentination in the cylinders. i changed the whole distributor as a whole because if one thing went bad in the distributor (especially a very old car), one of the other parts is bound to go bad not too soon after. just my point of view and good luck. dont forget to check the fuel!
if the voltage across your coil is alright then i would assume that the internals of your distributor are fouled. It happened to me and i now have a new distributor waiting to go in.
Make sure you double check your timing before you try fire it up again. I have seen threads on here where guys have had a distributor go bad and cause the t-belt to slip. Anyway, good luck.
