Hello g2ic, this is my first post here but not my first time on a car forum. I got this Ls for free (hand me down) and will not let it go to waste. Its a 92 with 183k miles. I imagine TB was replaced around 100k. All stock. Auto. So, my sisters boyfriend was driving it and it stalled and wouldn’t start again. After some tinkering aka plugs wires cap rotor MAP,checked timing, sensors, I plug the intake and it will start. Rough erratic idle, bogs on acceleration and will die just barely touching the throttle when its warm. It runs through a lot of fuel, just running it I’ve used a half tank trying to fix it. Now, I pull the intake tube so its just the manifold. There’s a hole to the left I realize if I plug it starts right up. I’ve sprayed carb cleaner everywhere looking for vac leaks. Its basically impossible to drive, you can move it, but can just touch the throttle ever so slightly, and when its warm, you can’t even touch it or it will die. Sometimes when trying to start It without plugging the intake it with backfire through the intake and some smoke will come out. I really appreciate any help I can get, I’ve read a million threads and came up with nothing. Someone please help!! Thank you! I will be as helpful as I can, pictures, video, whatever! I’m stumped!!
Did you check the timing on the timing belt itself? Kinda sounds like you could be off by a tooth.
As in? I pulled VC, driver side tire. All cams lined up. Though, it seems someone put two right sided pulleys in here, because the arrows point the Same way instead of meeting in the middle. It ran perfectly fine like this. I’ve done a lot. Main fuel relay. Tried putting 5 gal of good gas in it, ran the same. I just don’t understand… leaning towards thecomputer…thank you for responding! Just a kid try in to fix his teg.
Also picked up an o2 sensor today I will install tmrw. Been driving moms car in the mean time…
Bump…
I’m not sure because of it being auto, but there should be 2 holes to the left. One for the FITV(fast idle thermo valve) and the other for the IACV(idle air control valve) but I can’t remember which is which. The things I’ve read up on, Atleast for an erratic idle, is to take the IACV off and clean it, and clean it very well. And also the FITV has a wax plunger in it and when the engine gets to operating temp that plunger closes whatevs gap is there, you can open the FITV and screw the plunger all the way up, but I think on warm up you need to keep your foot on the petal as the FITV is there to raise the idle when warming up. Kinda does sound like your FITV is making a vacuum leak.
Yes, as in pull the VC, set the crank to TDC and check the marks on the cams. The main reason I mentioned it is because you said it backfires and you see smoke from the intake. Personally, I have only seen that happening when mechanical timing (timing belt) is wrong. You may also want to try a different ECU.
I did pull the vc and all marks lined up. Like I said it seems someone put two right sided pulleys in here, like they had a few integras apart when they were working on it. I don’t know. I’m going to start craigslisting another car I guess. Thanks…
Can you post a picture of what you mean? All the B series cam pulleys are identical regardless of whether it is exhaust or intake (or left/right as you put it) so that actually doesn’t sound right. Look at the attached pic from the FSM.
Okay jdecks, I appreciate the help, I’m gonna go pull the vc again and send pictures of what I mean. I truly appreciate this help… I’ll be back shortly withppictures
Okay, I’ll still take pictures, but basically where the two notches on the pulleys meet in the middle the “right” pulley points towards the middle, and the “left” pulley notch points towards the front of the car. I see my manual says the notches meet in the middle, but that is not the case here. Though, the reasoning to my suggestion of it being a different pulley, the notch that points towards the middle (right pulley) and the one that points to the front of the engine are still aligned perfect, just look off by 180 degrees. Is this possible ? Thank you!
I apologize some of the things I say are irrelevant and probably repeated myself many times, I’m not much of a mechanic and I’d just like to get this across. I think I’ve learned quite a lot, over the years, though.
If I read you right 92danee, the left cams arrow is pointing toward the front of the car, so then that means the up arrow on the left cam is pointing down. Something like that? If so then I would say that yes your left cam gear is flipped 180. Which I would assume would mess with driving because I thought the cams were not perfect circles, at one point there’s a lift, kinda like on a bmx the front crank wheel if you turn the pedals slow with your hands you can feel it get tighter at one point because the crank wheel is made just a bit off a perfect circle. Somewhat make sence? Lol
Close. Both arrows point upwards, though the left cams notch points to the front of the car. They both have an up arrow, pointing the sane direction, but the two small notches that are supposed to align in the middle, the right one is in the middle but the left one is clockwise like 180 degrees pointing forwards, completely lined up with the other notch
That’s fucked lol. Almost sounds like the cam gear was out in backwards but I don’t think there are marks on both side of it.
Gonna post some pics tmrw guys
Did this get fixed? Sounds like a problem I had a while ago. Narrowed it down to the igniter, but I wound up buying a whole new distributor since they are fairly cheap.
