92 rs wont start! help!

so i bought this car for 420$ from my neighbor, the head is extremely clean, but im not getting spark, ive changed the distributor cap, the rotor inside, spark plugs, and my valve cover seals, ive been told multiple things, like fuel filter, ignition wires, fuel pump. when i try to start it itll try to turn over and if im puting starter fluid in it youll here it ignite then go back to the starter noise. :dunno:

check all ground connections may be loose

could be the main fuel relay…remove the hose connected to the fuel rail…turn the key on and see if fuel comes out. if that is good check compression in all the cylinders…make sure they are all close. also check timing. if its obd 0 wiring…could be fuel injector resistors. could be computer not sending fuel signal. could be several things but keep working through this list and keep me informed.

ill try and test the fuel rail thing tomorrow, i donthave a way to test the compression. im PRETTY sure its obd1, correct me if im wrong, could be obd0 its completely stock. but im gonna try and get alot of stuff tested out tomorrow and ill update! thanks for the help

It sounds like no fuel is getting to the injectors. You said it tries to start on starting fluid so spark is likely ok. Follow the troubleshooting guide on the stock components forum. Check to see if you can hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key on. A likely culprit is the main fuel relay but there are many possibilities. By the way you’re right 92 is obd1, so don’t worry about the resistors. It wouldn’t hurt to make sure you have good spark.

so we tried replacing the main fuel relay, no luck. the fuel pump doesnt cut on unless i put a (not sure what its called) it has a ground wire that goes to a pin with a light, if i put that in the fuel relay and have it grounded then i can hear the fuel pump cut on, but it doesnt stay on unless thats in there… not sure what to do :dunno: my dad thinks its the ecu, but the ecu looks fine, no corruption or anything

Which wire are you grounding with the test light? Most likely there is a broken wire somewhere. If you are grounding the black(ground wire) out of the relay then you have an open ground. I can’t remember exactly where it goes but follow the wire and it should be connected to a ground point under the steering column. Also, did you replace the relay with a new one or a used one.?

it was grounding the fuel pump wire, not the black one, cant remember the color right now, replaced the relay with a new one, when i tried to start it with the fuel pump going it was getting spark, somebody say it could be the ecu… not sure, i looked at it and it looked clean, no corrosion or anything.

there are only four wires to the fuel pump. two yellow, two blacks. the all yellow is the power, the big black is the ground. the other smaller yellow red striped is the fuel gauge and the smaller black wire is a ground. so you should have been grounding the black? it goes to the rear trunk and grounds right beside the trunk hatch latch. just ground the black anywhere on the body of the car, it could have easily been cut somewhere along its path.

IDK if this would help but my friend was having the same problem with his car. It would try and fire with starter spray but that’s it. What it was was he had washed the engine down and the plug that runs to the distributor got wet and rusted out so it wasn’t getting full connection. It was the big plug that was the problem. We cleaned it out and it worked grate after that.

I agree, OP it should be a ground wire you are grounding. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but the ECU feeds power to the relay which feeds power to the pump (thick yellow wire). The relay is contolled by voltage, not ground. So if grounding a terminal makes the pump work then the ecu and relay are feeding voltage and you have a bad ground. If you can determine the exact terminal/wire you are grounding we can tell you which circuit is the problem.

91_LS: The OP’s problem seems to be that the fuel pump will not run, the distributor wiring is not related to the pump.

ok. so we changed the distributor. still not getting spark. and now i cant even get the fuel pump to go at all. idk what to do. somebody help! :wtf:

That sucks you said it had spark before and now not? Is it a used distributor? No spark is usually caused by a bad coil or igniter which are inside the distributor. Also check the cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires. As far as the fuel pump did you ever figure out if you have power and ground to the pump?
