I’ve got a stock 93 GSR thats got me stumped. In the winter, my car would not start, it gave the impression that it was a dead battery…no click, so I would throw a battery charge on and it would start right up. However, the battery voltage was checked, it was good, and grounds were good. I still ended up buying a new battery since the previous one was old and the problem continued…
As the weather got warmer, the starter began to at least click or the engine would turn over. Sometimes I have to hold the key to start position for a few seconds before it starts. NoW the next problem that’s come up is that it will stall in th middle middle of driving. The first time it happened, I had just pulled out of my driveway, it stalled, started right back up and continued to do that. Local mechanic could not duplicate the issue so nothing was done. It is still stalling while driving but it seems like it only does it in the early moments of driving. If it stalls, it sometimes takes 15 minutes or so before it starts. It turns over so I’m assuming it’s not the starter. I took off the distributor cap and cleaned the contacts, and rotor which didn’t look oxidized. Could it be ignition switch, or coil? Any thoughts or how to test certain things? Thanks!
so regardless of anything, the engine will always crank when you turn the key? we have to be clear on that in order to determine that the starting circuit is operating correctly
yes it always cranks…but there are times when i have to hold the key in start position for maybe 5-10 seconds with no reaction before it starts fine.
thanks for any help
not your starte…
1.ignition switch:) contacts are probably worn out or very dirty
2.ign coil/ignitor
3.Main fuel relay
if u say grounds are good check for those 3…search the forum alot of write ups on this problem…happened to me a while back around 156,000 mileage…i changed the whole distrubutor bcz the coil and ignitor kept overheating…all problems went away after i changed the distributor…but of course i checked my ign switch and Main fuel relay before i bought a 300$ distributor lol…goodluck
so you hold the key for 10 seconds and nothing at all? no crank?
if so, problem is in the starting circuit.
since it dies while driving, i’d bet ign. switch.
when the problem occurs, after turning the key to start, drop it back to the II position. if dash lights don’t illuminate, problem is ign. switch
although, from what you’ve described, there is a chance that there are several problems here
just pulled the switch out, a tad burned out huh? lol :stare:
Problems continuing…
So put the new ignition switch in, and there was no power, no lights, no crank, nothing. Put old one back on, still no power. Battery was tested, showed fully charged. Is there something I could have possibly tripped or short circuited? Thanks for any help!
Check the battery fuse under hood. Check all fuses
