99.9% Powerless

Problem: No f-ing clue???

Symptoms: When the key is turned to the ‘on’ (II) position all dash lights flash on as usual. If the key is turned to ‘start’ (III) position all power is lost. If headlights are turned on when key is in the on position all power is lost. If the brake pedal is depressed while in the on position all power is lost. In all cases, my car remains powerless and when removing the key, then putting it back in and turning it to the on position again, the dash lights do NOT come on. The only way to get power again is to disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery, and then reconnect it.

I have tried: New battery, check/sand/resecure all grounds, test all fuses. New battery changed nothing, exact same problem. I removed and re finished the surfaces on all of the major grounds in the engine bay and both connections to my starter - changed nothing. Checked all major fuses (battery, ignition, etc) to ensure they were not blown, all are fine.

My motor is completely stock. I removed the stereo system - deck, speakers and all long ago. I am not running any peripheral electronics. I do have a CompuStar alarm installed on the car, and have not had any issues with it so far.

I’ve searched far and wide in these and other forums for someone having the exact same problem, but it seems most are different in one way or another. Regardless I have tried most of the things suggested but have had no success. Any more suggestions would be of great help, since at this moment my car is sitting in a parking lot whose owners would gladly tow it. It’s also my daily driver. I love my car, and it saddens and slightly angers me to see it so useless and to be plagued by such a frustrating problem. :worry:

Well, no replies yet but it’s alright. After connecting one end of a jumper cable to the positive post and the other end to the starter I was able to turn the motor over but once the key was let go the engine would die and power would be cut again.

Problem was then definitely somewhere in the hot line between the battery and the starter/fuse box. The exposed wires that are pressed into the C clamp for the battery post were loose and corroded so it was a simple fix, clean the wires and clamp and reassemble the clamp ensuring the connection is good. Problem solved, power is flowing evenly to everything and there isn’t even the slightest dimming of lights when depressing the brakes, etc. If anyone has a similar problem, you may want to quickly check your positive lines as well as your grounds with a test light.

could possibly be the alarm, and i would check your ign. switch, mine went out on me, car would start, as soon as it would go to the run pos. it would die
