A/C ompressor, low pressure switch? huh?

hey everyone…

I’ve been trying to get my A/C charged w/ the www.autorefrigerants.com stuff, which supposedly works great. Anyhow, I went to hook up the hoses and stuff, turned on my A/C, and nothing happened. I don’t think the compressor turned on at all, as I heard no audible “click” or anything out of the ordinary engine sound. I had the car on w/ the A/C on for about 15 minutes, and nothing happened. i followed the instructions to a T, according to the sheet given to me w/ the refrigerant.

Anyhow, what i was wondering, was since my system is EMPTY of all gases (leak was found in the spring – compressor supposedly working fine then… leak-stop going to be used). Anyhow, since the compressor should be working fine, my dad suggested that maybe there’s such thing as a low-pressure cutoff switch, which disengages the A/C compressor whenever the pressure in the system is too low, in order to save the compressor from damage (ie: no gas in the system = compressor overworking = compressor dying). Does this make sense? If so, how can i bypass this switch or otherwise get the compressor to turn on in order to fill the system?

ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!

Thanks
~Eric

yes, there is a low pressure switch. It’s just aside of the radiator, driver side. It can be reached by under the car. (When I was diagnosing my A/C problem, I bypassed the switch and the A/C worked, I was low in refrigerant)

If you have more Q’s, just ask!

You want questions… you got 'em.

  • What does it look like…
  • Where exactly can I find this (in relation to the nearest parts)…
  • How do I bypass it w/o destroying something…
  • Can is in ANY way be accessed from above the car, as I have no jack, and my car won’t get on ramps… also live in an apartment and that makes fixing under-car things difficult…

Thanks for any answers!

Also, any pics are greatly appreciated!!

what does it looks like… hum, it’s quite far in my head(did this last summer). But I remember that it was near the A/C fan relay, Like a little under, 2 wires going to it. It looks like a relay. Do you have a manual? If so, look to find out what colors are the wires, it’s gonna help a lot! (If you don’t have one, i’ll check tomorrow, my manual is in my car and I have to go to sleep now!)

To bypass it, you simply need to connect the two wires together using whatever methods you want.

It can be accessed from above, but it’s harder… but you could easily raise the car up with your emergency jack and crawl under… that’s what I did.

HTH!

Answer: Thanks for the help. I am not at home (on vacation until tomorrow), but found the Helms online, and have located the switch and the wire colors SHOULD be Blue/Red. That’s the only wire coloer coming from the switch. All I do is basically bypass the switch completely, correct??

Thanks again for the help

yep, all you have to do is connect the 2 wires together. Like you said in your first post, this switch is there to protect the compressor, so when you try it, do it fast! Don’t leave the A/C on for too long if your low in pressure. (You said you tried to refilled the A/C?)
