A/C overhaul

Anyone ever completely overhauled their A/C system? I’m buying new (used, non-leaking) pipes, a compressor, evaporator, and the A/C radiator thing, and replacing the leaking parts from my A/C system. I drive a 1991 GS, and the parts are from a 1991 RS. How hard is it to do the overhaul, especially w/o having the car raised up on any decent sized jackstands?

Any advice as to what I should start replacing first?
I know that Midas, when they did the leak-test, said the compressor, evaporator, and some of the pipes were leaking – they wouldn’t specify which ones though (bastards!).

Thanks for any help.
Oh, and I do have the Haynes and Helms manuals.

You better find which parts are leaking before you go out and spend a 1000 dollars on parts. They should be able to diagnose which parts are leaking. Midas sucks anyways.

I got a whole new A/C system for $75 from a member on the board. Supposedly not leaking too, which is good.

I’m just wondering about the labor involved with the overhaul – is it too much for the average garage mechanic like myself?

The more you could put on yourself, the more money you will save.

I would try to put as many pieces on.

Check the compressor for any clutch wear. If you see no problems with the compressor I would put that on, because thats the biggest part the mechanic will have to deal with putting on the car.
