a/c r13-r134

Be careful when recharing you system with R-12 at a shop. Some shops (at least in Florida) have been using a cheaper and VERY dangerous substitute that uses butane as one of it’s components. A local TV station did a demo with a fully charged system on a junk car. They cut a line in the passenger compartment and then generated a small spark. KABOOM!! An expensive rechange doesn’t mean they’re using the right stuff, but a cheap R-12 job should be a red flag. BTW: In the Bahamas REAL R-12 can be bought for about $230 for a 30 lb. bottle from the local NAPA stores. Last time I checked, 30 lbs. of R-12 in the US was over $800! Me thinks it’s a gov’ment PLOT!

It is still cold and had not leaked out for the most part. I put in 1.5 cans last year and about 3/4 can this spring to get things in shape for summer. [/B]

Hey, Brinks, please shoot me an email. Gotta ask you a few Q’s.

Me thinks it’s a gov’ment PLOT

It’s no plot- it’s the same reason they tax everything else we use that’s unhealthy- so they can get their money before we croak:dead: not that I agree, just statin fax.

anyways- good to see this thread alive again, cause I’m still pondering the whole conversion or just tryin to fix the leak and add some liquid gold in the system- well it better be for what we pay for it eh?

I think we got some good info here worth savin’

So your saying thay sell this kit to put in my a/c too refill my old R12 freon that in my car. I mean my a/c works right now but i need to reill it .

curis: I used specific AC O-rings from Pep Boys. They are blue in color. They come in both green and blue. These o-rings are treated so the don’t corrode due to the refrigerent.

HondaF1: Thanks!!

brinks: When you got the recharge pack from the website was your a/c working before you ordered ,or was it already empty (leak). I ask this question because i ordered a recharge pack and my a/c works but it not cold like i want it. Here i California it’s not summer yet but damm it’s gettin hot and i want my a/c working.

I was wondering if you had any problem with your refill kit that you got from the web site ? The problem that i have is that my adapter fitting that i got from the place doesn’t fit to my lines. I was wondering if they gave me the wrong fittings.

there are 2 types of fittings. the r-12 type are the screw type and cam stock on the car. If the hose you have wont fit these, then it is a r-134 quick connect fitting and you will have to purchase an adfaptor to go over the r-12 fitting in the car. They are only a couple bucks. Is the fitting you have screw type or quick connect type?

So did your fitting just screwed in with no problem, because some
how the fitting that they gave me just don’ t fit. I mean i tried both them too both lines and… nothing. I looked up the web site and the sell this hose that has the R12 type fitting, so i don’t know if i should buy it from them.

The first one they sent me was the r-12 screw type. That POS broke so I bought a new r-134a charging hose and r-134 adaptor fittings for the car. If the connector on the ac line in your car looks like the valve to inflate your tires, it is a r-12 fitting. The charging hose is threaded and screws onto the fitting in car.

If the charging hose you have wont screw in, but kinda pulls back (it is spring loaded) then it is a r-134a charging hose. To use this you will have to but a r-134a conversion fitting thar screws down over your old r-12 fitting in the car and allows you to use the spring loaded r-134 charging hose.

So which one is threaded, the one on the car or the one that goes to the can?

The fitting they gave me just don’t fit. i was trying to screw in the adapter fit the it came with and the little thing that looks like a needle inside the ac low pressure is sticking to far out so the 134 adapter cant screw in right.

I dont know if the needle suppose to stick that far out , because i tried to screw in the adapter to the line and it started to release gas just like if you let the air out of your tires.

If i can’t figure this out the i have to buy that hose they have with the R12 fitting. and this means that i have to wait for the hose to come in, and here in L.A. it’s getting hot and i want too recharged my ac

" too hot in my car "

the way it works is that your adaptor should have its own needle like valve inside it that pushes down on the needle like valve in the one already on the car. gas might escape for a sec while you screw it down, but then it should stop. get some gloves and give it another try.

Thanks, i give a try in the morning.

Can someone give me some tips on how to get my A/C compressor to turn on? I had a problem getting the R-12a refrigerant into my system, because for some unknown reason, my compressor dind’t seem to turn on and suck the gas from the can like it’s supposed to.
I never heard any “click” or noise from the A/C compressor area. :frowning:
And yes, the A/C was turned to full blast and the little blue light was on.

I’ve already wasted a full can of stop-leak because I thought it was empty, and it leaked out everywhere when I took it off. D’OH!! Any advice into this problem with (suposedly) my compressor, would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks guys…

PS: It’s supposed to be about 90*F here next week, and my car is black leather interior. NASTY! Need this fixed! I have 9 cans of refrigernat left, and one can of stop leak. Also have a complete backup system (compressor, evaporator, lines, etc…) in my garage, if absolutely necessary. I’d rather not use the compressor if mine still works (which, in the spring, it supposedly did when I had my system leak-checked). Thanks again!!!

UPDATE…

Just to let everyone know, that once I fixed my minor electrical problem, I got thesystem recharged and everything is ICE FUGGIN’ COLD. Great stuff. Also doesn’t seem to leak out of the vents like the real R-12 did (the R-12a is a larger molecule, and leaks are harder to come by).

My car can get ice cold in under 2 minutes now, and it’s 28*C and humid as heck here right now.

I’d definately recommend this stuff to anyone.

Man I just had to put in my condinser fan cuz the berings were shot. But then I forgot about to plug in one of the sockets and my AC was not cold at all only when I was driving down the road would it get semi cold.

I Finaly relized what was wron and now it’s friggin cold.
I’m glad cuz I live in CA (Southern San Juaquin Vally) and we have had 100F+ for the past few weeks and we’ll probly hit 110 some time this summer. Welcome to CA!!

how do you know if you’re out of coolant? my light comes on, but it’s not very cold air coming outta there…

also, how do you know if you have a leak, does anyone have some pics?

and how do you check your o-ring?

I just got the enviro-safe kit, it didn’t have any instructions, and i’m a bit of a retard at this stuff, but would like to try and learn… can anyone post up a step-by-step, maybe with some pics?

thanks,
Alim.

the enviro-safe is very easy to use. First thing, you need to ger a pair of rubber gloves, you wouldnt want any frostbite just in case of a mishap. Evacuate the system of the old gas if any remains. Chances are that all of your old gas has leaked out and you wont be venting much, so no need for the tree huggers to worry. Next step is to buy a r-134 can tap and charging hose, if you dont have one already. The r-12 hose that is sometimes sent with the envirosafe conversions is a POS, the r-134 quick connect hose works much better. Additionally if you get this new hose, you will need the r-134 adaptor fitting for the low pressure side of the a/c line in your car (in front of engine). You should be able to get it all for under $20.
If you purchased a can of leak stopper, use it first.
Screw the charging hose into the tap, and screw the tap onto the can. Turn the valve to puncture the can. Dont connect it to the car yet. Open the valve a bit until gas starts to flow and then back off a bit to close it. Do this because it can be difficult to hear/feel when the gas is coming out of the can and it is important to know when it is coming out if you are not using pressure gauges (charging by weight). Screw the adaptor onto the low side port on the a/c line that is in front of the engine, the one in between the head and the radiator. Connect the r-134 quick connect charging hose from your can to the a/c line you just converted. Start the car, a/c on cold and high fan speed. Open the tap and stard to add the contents of the can. If you are using leak stopper, follow the manufacturer’s directions. Regardless of what you are putting in, be sure to pay attention to the weight of gas printed on the can and the maximum weight of gas printed to the blue a/c sticker under the hood. My sticker is located on the pas. side strut tower. It recommends 34oz of r-12. On the back f the can there should be a conversion chart that tells you how many oz. of the gas in that can = how many oz. of r-12. Remember to pay attention to the ratio because 1 can of es-12 does not = 1 can of r-12. Dont overcharge it. If anything, undercharge and add more later if you feel it isnt cool enough. Remember to take account of the weight of the leak stopper too. It is an easy job to do, you dont need to pull a vacum, flush the system, etc. so it is a drop-in. I researched this stuff for about 6mo and have had it over a year and my a/c is cold, esp. on the highway. Good luck!

I did my recharge about 4 days ago and i think i might need one more can. Cold, but i dont know what temp the air has too be.

Omar.
