A Few Problems with my Newly Acquired DA

So i just bought another 91 DA but i do have a couple problems with it that i hope my fellow G2icers could help me solve. First i should say the engine is completely stock 325,000kms on it. Engine still feels strong and it still does very well on gas mileage.

Heres the bad.

  1. When i drove home from work the other day the car engine light came on and the engine sputtered and the engine wasnt outputting any power while i pressed on the accelerator and then died. I waited a couple seconds to start it again and i managed to drive it the 50 meters to my driveway and the same thing happened again. After that i havent really driven the car since but i did try to start it and it was a pretty hard startup. It had a lumpy idle and it felt like dieing, something that never happened the first 2 weeks that i owned the car upon start up.

  2. Also once and awhile it has a fluctuating idle, could that be the rotor and cap in the distributor?

  3. The E-brake light sometimes doesnt go off on release. and sometimes when the engine is running bad, the light kinda dims in and out.

  4. I also believe my car is running rich because while i drive my car i get that burned gasoline smell, my gf also said she could smell it.

  5. And my engine seems to be alil louder than usual. kinda has a ticking sound coming from it. Maybe i need the valve adjusted?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive been out of the DA game for 6 years and i forgotten alot about the car so i need some help.

TIA

watsup bro. start by checking your codes. a 91 will flash the code through the led on the ecm with the key on. no need to jump the service connector

but it sounds like a timing/ignition issue. but check the codes first and report back. it’s jason, btw. tonys buddy

Yes i knows its you Jason. You still have a teg too? Anyways the code started off with 4 Fast blinks then it paused then 1 slow blink followed by 4 Fast blinks…

naa. sold the da a while ago. code 4 is ckp. crank position. located inside the distributor. non servicable. which means distributor would need to be replaced. not really a solid way to test it on a running car. you can test resistance, but ohm testing is pretty inconclusive for anything beyond an open or short circuit

also looks like iac code. solve for the code 4 first though

i have a another DA sitting in my parents garage. so i can use that distributor

yea, try it out. see if it fixes it. 90% of the time on these b series it’s the distributor. long as it’s from a 90-91. if that is it and you’re gonna buy another distributor, i’d highly recommend you hit the wreckers and buy a used oem unit. you’ll be much better off than with a cheap new one. the oe ones have a sticker usually. looks like the target emblem, but blue and green

Your brake light is on because your brake fluid is low.

or more likely the contact in the park brake switch is worn/corroded
