a few questions about electrical and entertainment...

first the electrical,

i already did the fuel pump switch for anti-theft but i was wondering if i can do something else. i have some 16A wire laying around along with a 16A push button. is there a way to rig it up to the starter? would 16A be sufficient enough to connect to the ground end of the starter?

then the entertainment,

ive seen knobs on cars that would adjust how much bass a stereo system would hit. does that depend on the type of amp or is it just a knob you buy and connect it?

Some amplifiers have external gain and crossover controls. Rockford Fosgate for example is a company I’ve seen use it. Not all amplifiers have the ability to be manipulated from the front, but you should be able to tell fairly easily if yours(if you already have one) has a place to plug in that type of external control. Older amplifiers I’ve owned haven’t had them but I’ve had two rockford fosgate setups that included the external control knobs. Don’t know if that really helps…

THANK YOU!! THATS THE ANSWER I WAS LOOKING FOR.

now about the starter… anyone?

Ditto to the amps with “bass boost” knobs, you can also get a HU that has a bass “gain”, [volume] control and can give you that option with any amp, in fact you can get a HU that will allow you to adjust the sub amps gain, x-over point, the Q and phasing, even EQ, pretty much all functions of the sub amp.
There are even some universal off-board “gain” control knobs and pre-amps/x-over/EQs that will allow you to “control” any amp.

There is no “ground end” on the starter that you can connect a lead to, the starter is grounded to the engine through it’s case.

If your car is a 5 speed you could install a switch on one of the clutch interlock leads, input or output, the “CIS” supplies a ground to the starter relay, no ground no start.

The ground is low current so a 1A switch is all that is needed, lots smaller and easier to hide. :whisper:94

but what if my car is auto? :frowning:

Then there is no CIS or starter relay, you will then have to install a “starter kill” relay, best place is the input or output of the “A/T Gear Position Switch” black/white lead, and if you do not use your car cig. lighter, it can be used as a “phantom” switch to control the starter kill relay.

When you did your fuel pump “kill”, how exactly did you do it?:hmm: 94

i did this…

where do i get a starter kill relay?

or where should i tap into the a/t gear postition switch? i use my car cig lighter though.

edit: just looking into it online, doing the position switch is going to be alot easier. i already have everything i need- wire, shrink wrap, the push button switch. whoohooo!!

OIC on the existing kill switch, the switch is on the ECU control lead to the fuel pump relay, [a low current ground requiring a small 1A switch].

A starter cut relay can be had just about anyplace, it is just a standard automotive SPDT relay… http://www.the12volt.com/relays/relays.asp

Best place to install the relay is on the A/T Gear Position Switch harness, you will need to pull the console to access it, there are easier places but they are easy for a crook also.

A relay should be used as the starter lead is relatively high current, [12V+]. :sipread:94

THANKS!! will i need a higher switch for the position sensor? is it also 12v?

im not going to be home for a few days and i dont have my repair manual with me. is there an online book i can look at?

i cant wait for the weekend so i can do this one!!

Because you need a relay to do starter kill, [even if done at the A/T Gear Position Switch] all that is needed is a 1A switch to supply the relays coil with a ground.:corn: 94

You can probably find something here on the A/T Gear Position Switch if you search.

fcm, where would i find that gear position switch?

last weekend i ended up spending the whole time working on the stereo system… but thankfully thats all done now.

The “Gear Position Switch” is located next to the shifter, on the right side under console.:whisper: 94
