A thread I never would've imagine I'd start....no, I didn't crash....

Hey everyone…I have been fighting with this thought for the past 4 years.

I am seriously contemplating letting Mango go…the car is definitely showing signs of its age; it is nowhere close to where you all last saw it.
Each time I fix something another comes up. Nothing that some time and TLC won’t fix; but I no longer have the time, and there are other priorities in life. I have breathed numerous last breaths into it, and I am getting very tired. I have, and am still thinking long and hard…Ryan (ENRON)'s experiences and regrets are a HUGE reason I have held on for so long…

This car I’ve had for 10 years…from bone stock, black, to where it is now…all that know me know the love, countless hours, and all that I have put into it. But given what is said above…I am really wondering if it is time.

I have told (or tried to) tell each and everyone on here who post a thread like this that they will regret it…I’m quite sure I will too…but the circumstances play a part in it for me right now (as I’m sure they did for those who chose to sell)…

Help me people…my vision is a bit clouded by the fact that up until now, there hasn’t been a car that I have seen and have instantly liked to the point that I’d think about selling my car…there has never been a car that, in my opinion, more fun to drive than mango…I will be test driving next saturday…I am not sure if I want the test drive to be awesome, or awful…

If mango could be perfect again…

I say keep the car. But like you said, you have know time to drop anymore money in to it. But if i had some cash to give away,id be glad to help you keep it:) It be nice to see G2IC put together a donation for you so you can fix the car up to what it was before. What do the wrest of my fellow G2ICers thing? And OP, would you except?

Rather than being sad about it, why not do a full build? (full body work and a nice engine setup). If the time isn’t right for that, sell it and do a build later on in life. I couldn’t stand to own a car that I didn’t enjoy or if it wasn’t a project in the process of being where I want it to be. Nothing more useless than a car that does nothing.

out of curiosity may we see some pictures from the glory days? and if possible a current shot.

Dakn bro I dont know what to tell you because Im going through the same right now. Thinking about getting rid of my first car that I bought with my own money when I was 16 yrs old. Im thinking on just keep it well maintained, reliable, no more mods until I graduate and settle down, and hopefully my life and my financial situation will be more stable by then.

all you need is a parking spot and a car cover where nobody will fuck with it.
buy another daily and keep it rolling man…

don’t sell it.

Max, I can identify very much with how you feel, I’ve been through much of the same emotion and internal debate. Not sure how much you know about my situation, but from what I’ve seen with myself, Ryan, Phat, Burt, and Ho I can tell you pretty confidently that you can make it through this in a positive way no matter what your decision.

5 years ago my priorities changed and I stopped taking car of my car, it became something that was there for pure utility, just something to drive. I contemplated selling it once it started breaking down all the time (blew an engine, a radiator, ignition switch, 2 timing belts…). I was fed up. Took me 6 months but I finally found an '04 Impreza, like you mentioned, this was pretty much the first time I stumbled on another car that I actually liked everything about, the shape, the awd, the look of the headlights & taillights… After that my DA just sat there collecting dust for almost 2 years. I did consider selling it, but the fact of the matter was that it was pretty worthless. Too many parts I didn’t want to get rid of (by this point most of these were already off the car) and with all of that off of the car it was easier to keep it than try to sell it.

Then, about 1.5-2yrs later I started to get excited about cars again, about my Integra, so I started making plans and collecting parts. A unfortunate fender bender made the idea of building that car a much worse idea. I was able to pick up a shell before I scrapped the old shell and now I’m back on track (as slow as that progress may be).

If I were you I wouldn’t hesitate to move on, but I wouldn’t sell the car, or at least wait till after getting the new car and letting the “honeymoon phase” end. I don’t know many people at all who have been able to sell their DA and never get another. No matter if you sell or just let it collect dust, don’t be surprised if in a couple more years you’re building one again…

Best of luck Max! (btw, what’s the new car you’re gettin’ turned on by?)

Don’t sell it man! What’s the point!? KEEP IT.

Could you possibly afford another car without selling? I know times are tough and that might seem out of the question, but it may be an option if you are just tired of the problems, not necessarily the car. Now, you have to fix that problem right away because you always drive it. If you could get another, newer car, you wouldn’t have to worry as much.

X2
I couldn’t have put this any better,

with all these should i sell threads around lately. it make me think. “There will never be a day when I dont have mine, ill sell everything including the house and sleep in the car on the street:D”

Seriusly, an OG like yourself has been in the game for quite some time now, could you honestly see yourself getting rid of it and all the extras, just to relize you want anther one in a couple of years and have to start all over.

Put it somewhere safe, and bring it out in 5-10 years when it will Truely be a Classic:up:

Great suggestion, exactly what I did.
I’m in the same dilemma, my Integra have been under a car cover tucked away for the past 1.5 years. I see more pics of my car than I actually see the car it’s self.
There were several times where I thought about selling her but after a goodnight sleep and memories of good times, the thoughts fades, for several months till my friends start to grind me about bring her back out.
I’ve been saving for the past 8 months and only a few hundred short of my goal. I’m in the collecting parts phase right now with most of the big parts out of the way. It’s the little fittings and shit that slows everything down.
Whatever you choose, we’ll stand behind you man!
Good Luck.

Don’t sell it. I’ve had my DA for 11 years now and there were points where I wanted to give up and sell it and maybe coming back later on in life. But think about it, taking away the sentimental value of the car, but the money and time invested in making your DA what it is today, you will never get that back fully. So you’re gonna sell it for a few grand, when the car to you is probably worth a few times more than that, but no one will ever give you what you think your car is worth.

So to summarize, don’t sell your car. You won’t get back anywhere close to the amount of money you put into it, and then on top of that you’ll hate yourself down the road for letting it go for so cheap, or letting it go period. Do you really need a few grand towards a new car that bad that you need to sell your DA? For me anyway, my DA is my hobby, and that’s how I learned to cope with my love/hate relationship with it. Somedays you hate it and want it gone, others you are so glad to have it in your life.

So just park it somewhere, hopefully a garage, forget about it for a while and when it’s time you can come back energized.

If you really have no more passion for the car, then by all means sell it and live through the car as a memory. I have a feeling that isn’t true though. I remember seeing this car years ago and being inspired, it’s so unique and well built. So I would say store it until you get financially set and mechanically motivated to give the car life again and get yourself a new ride for now. Personally selling a DA project car is just making less and less sense since the value is nowhere near book, and what people will pay is even less than that.

This about summarizes every argument for keeping it that there is.

Your time alone invested is worth more than that car will fetch (and I’m not knocking Mango’s value I promise) and that alone should be enough.

Plus without your teggy what are you gunna do when your wife/gf and you have a fight? Going and working on the car is a surefire way to change your mood and not to mention you direct the aggravation into a productive energy!

What would you do without your teggy man?? I have been pissed at mine and wanted to bash it with a hammer because it wasn’t cooperating or it was having problems but then I thought about it and it was just her way of sayin she needed love.

Molly (my project car) has helped me out with depression so much too… Instead of sitting on the couch or going and getting messed up I go work on her listen to some tunes and it helps. I think for people a hobby like a car or something that requires signifigant investment of time is key to keeping them sane.

Please don’t sell your car. Put it in storage for a while if you need to, but don’t sell her.

(Plus in the next 10 or so years we will have the privilage of going to sonics and such car meets having classic cars that we can bitch about the little “ricers” of the future being annoying and stuff!)

bottom line DONT SELL IT, i bought my first da 4 years ago, built it from the ground up, traded it for a 05 CBR 600rr and as much as i love my bike, i am now searching DESPERATELY for another one to fill my void. i loved that car so much and i didnt realize how much i did till it was gone

Max, look at it this way. Last year, a damn tree fell on mine. I still haven’t found it in me to get rid of it. I’ve had chances to get other cars, easily. But, I don’t want to let go of all the effort I’ve put into it. With my tax return, will bring the DA back to life, and better than ever. so, I’ll tell you what. You want to see motivation to keep? watch my thread, when I create it. See what it looks like as we speak, and then watch the rebuild. Letting go is hard to do. The fact that you’ve toyed with the idea for 4 years, and haven’t committed to the idea of selling should also tell you something. You don’t just hang onto something like that for so long, just to sell it.
