I feel pretty stupid but i dont know what else to do so i’m asking for anyone’s help right now. ok i have read that the camshafts have to be at tdc the same time that the number one cylinder is at tdc well i took my valve cover off and noticed that my camshafts were not at tdc when the number one cylinder was at the top of its stroke so i loosened the timing belt and set the camshafts at tdc and but the timing belt back on and i couldnt get the timing belt as tight as it was so i figured ill jsut turn the car over and see how its running. so i did and the car is running like poop. it sounds like it has hella valve over lap like a dragster and i was just wondering what did i do wrong. ne help very soon would be appreciated.
Have you checked your timing since you did this adjustment?
sounds to me that you’ve screwed up your valve timing. recheck everything. turn crank till #1 piston is at tdc. can also check this with a screwdriver thru the spark plug hole. look at your cam sprokets, the “up” should be pointing up. if its pointion down give the crank one complete turn and recheck the "up"marks. you can lock the cams in the “up” position by placing a drill bit in each one to hold it. when you reinstall your timing belt turn the engine one complete turn by hand then tighten the tensioner. After you get the valve timing right then check the ignition timing.
sounds like there might be a tooth that is off on the cam gears.
unless your car recently had engine work done to it, there should be no reason why the cams were not at TDC when the crank is at the TDC mark. I mean, if it was running fine before then everything was set to spec.
If you didn’t already know this, the white marking on the crank pulley needs to be lined up with the TDC indicator on the timing belt cover.
once that is lined up, the “UP” marks on the 2 cam gears need to be pointing up. If you look carefully, there is a small marking (line) on one of the tooth on both cam gear. those markings will need to line up with each other once the belt is on and tighten down.
once you get the cam gears lined up, turn the crank pulley by hand counterclock wise 2 or 3 times first. then check to see if the marking on the tooth are still lined up with each other and that the timing belt is tight.
cam timing is pretty tricky if you don’t do it all the time. Just be patient and pay attention to details. you’ll be okay.
oh yeah, I hope you have some kind of repair manual while doing this. have you heard of piston to valve contact? trust me, it’s not something you’d want to happen.
aight thanks guys i figured it out. i just didnt tighten down my timing belt the right way. i got it all back together and its running good. Thanks for the help.
