Adjusting the timing

Hi,

Long story short I have a 92 Integra 1.8L, I took it in to get smoged and everything passed except the timing was reading 22 TDC and it is supposed to be be set at 16 TDC plus or minus 2 degrees. So I take it home and pull out the service manual and I follow the steps. Align the red mark with timing mark with the distributor fully advanced the best I could get was 9 degrees. So I go back to the smog shop and he tells me I have to align the white mark, no problem I adjust it right there using the white mark and set it 16 degrees and it passes. So my question is, is the white mark suppose to be used or the red mark in between the other two marks. The factory service manual states the red mark. But the bigger issue is, if I am suppose to use the red mark I cannot get it to align with the timing mark when i set the timing light to 16, with the distributor fully advanced it reads 9 degrees. Any thoughts on this issue. The car has 150,000 miles and has always passed smog in the past and no modifications to the engine.

For one thing I know you are supposed to jump the service connector before adjusting the timing. This is because the computer is always trying to find a base timing of its own. As far as the marks go I am not sure about that either. From what I understand, on the pulley, there is a place where there is three notches. The middle notch is what u are supposed to set too.

I have also heard, if u have an adjustable timing light, set it to 16 degrees then set it to the white mark by itself.

Sounds like you’re doing it wrong. Are you sure you’re reading the procedure for IGNITION timing, not mechanical timing? It should be on page 23-79 of your Helms Manual.

There are FOUR marks on your crank pulley: 18, 16, 14 BTDC and TDC (exactly at top dead center, so 0 deg BTDC). Three of the marks are right next two each other, this is 18, 16, and 14 BTDC. 16 BTDC should be red, the others are white. The fourth mark which is further away, should also be white. Often these marks can be hard to see if the paint has worn off.

I modified my pulley and repainted the markings:

They’re hard to see, so here’s a VERY high res version of the same shot: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3634/3481105721_856051f9a8_o.jpg

I do have an adjustable timing light and that is what I did, I set the timing light to 16 and adjusted the white line to the timing mark. Hopefully this is the case

I followed the instructions from my manual on page 23-77 for ignition timing inspection and setting. I just need to find out now, that if you use am adjustable timing light and you set the knob on the timing light to 16 the you use the white line and not the red

Yeah, I’m not sure, I’ve always used standard timing lights which you don’t make any adjustments on.

ye, i’m pretty sure if the timing light is adjustable, you set it to 16 and line it up with tdc. as far as i recall
just check the instructions that came with your light. if you don’t have them, just google the make and model of it and you should be able to find them
