Advice on restoring exterior

Hi everyone,

I have been searching around the Internet and on this website for quite some time and I am yet to find an answer that would apply to my case. I have seen a lot of people talk about the starting grit that should be used when sanding a car, but I have also seen mixed emotions about it. Some people say to start with 300 while others say that’s too coarse, etc. My 92 LS was red before it was repainted to red again (by Macco :vomit:) and soon after to orange. My car is currently orange and I would like to sand it down completely and paint it a different color since the orange got old for me (Had it orange for 5 years).

I don’t think it was painted properly in the first place and I believe the orange was sprayed right over the red with minor prep work done. What should I do to sand everything down and get it ready to be repainted? I don’t want to go too coarse because some people mentioned something about visible scratches, but I also think that due to my circumstances I may have to start coarse. Your help is greatly appreciated!
